El arte de aprender

Tips on Studying Spanish

1. Develop an "ear" for Spanish: Listen to Spanish music, watch movies in Spanish, watch Spanish cable TV

2. Practice Speaking: your child can record himself/herself speaking and also try to speak Spanish every chance that he/she has without being afraid to make mistakes. Try to find a native speaker who can be his/her conversation partner. This can be a greatest asset and perhaps he/she can also provide assistance to him/her partner in English.

3. Be consistent: To learn a language takes time and commitment. Your child needs to devote about 20 to 30 minutes almost every day. This will help your child to be successful more than "cramming" for an hour or two.

4. Use flashcards: Make cards small enough to carry around. Write Spanish on one side, and English on the other side. This way, your child can capture "wasted" time (standing in line, riding the bus, waiting for class to start, etc.) and turn it into productive study time. Even if you only have a couple of minutes, he/she can use it to study a few flashcards.

5. Label your surroundings with flashcards: Make labels/flashcards for things all over your house. For example: la pared (wall), la puerta (door), el escritorio (desk) etc. You child can also create two sets of flashcards, one to go and one that he/she places around the house to study when at home. For example, before getting something from the refrigerator your child quizzes himself/herself before opening the refrigerator door. Remove the labels only after he/she has mastered the vocabulary.

6. Read out loud: Try reading out loud. Your child will get all of the benefits of reading, plus your child will get really good pronunciation practice. In fact, as a beginner, your child should read aloud as much as possible.

7. Practice, practice, practice: See the list attached for online resources. Your child can also search online for Spanish grammar (), listening (),  speaking ( ), and vocabulary () activities.
