HENRY FORD HEALTH SYSTEM

POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY

Henry Ford Health System offers Postdoctoral Fellowships in Health Psychology, which prepare psychologists to practice independently in the assessment and treatment of medical patients with behavioral manifestations or etiology.

Fellows develop expertise in differential diagnosis, behavioral problems associated with common medical conditions, consultation with referring physicians, and working with multidisciplinary groups.

Fellows perform consultations including chart review, patient assessment, and feedback to staff. They develop liaison relationships with one or more medical/surgical divisions and participate in the programs of that specialty area, including collaborative rounding, and multidisciplinary team meetings, representing the Department of Behavioral Health.

Fellows have the opportunity to develop one or more research projects independently and/or in collaboration with senior staff. Fellows can take advantage of a wide variety of medical education opportunities. On Thursdays, fellows will attend Behavioral Health Grand Rounds. On Fridays, fellows attend weekly teaching conferences and team meetings.

Our fellows are prepared for jobs in health psychology and have gone on to work in a variety of clinical, academic, and research settings.

There will be 2 positions for the 2019-2020 Academic Year. The following rotations will be combined with the interests of the fellows:

Chronic Pelvic Pain (1 day/week)

The fellow provides clinical assessments and brief treatment for women with chronic pelvic pain who present to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology specialty clinic. The fellow works in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of a gynecological surgeon, nurses, and physical and occupational therapists. At this specialty clinic, patients complete a gynecological evaluation with the surgeon then a psychological evaluation with the fellow. The surgeon and fellow then discuss treatment planning and then, together offer treatment recommendations to patients based on those evaluations. As part of the training at this clinic, fellows will gain knowledge of medical interventions for pelvic pain and gain additional experience in multidisciplinary care.

Psycho-Oncology – General (3 days/week)

Henry Ford Cancer Institute is a large, urban, tertiary and quaternary care program specializing in advanced treatments and complex cancer care. The Psycho-Oncology Fellow will gain experience and expertise in the assessment and management of the major psychiatric disorders encountered in the medically ill/cancer patient including: Adjustment Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders, Cognitive Disorders, Psychotic Disorders, and Somatoform Disorders in both an outpatient and inpatient setting. The individual will learn therapeutic approaches for the management of cancer patients and their caregivers including cognitive-behavioral interventions (e.g., relaxation techniques, self-hypnosis, meditation), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Smoking Cessation, and bereavement counseling. Minor rotations in cancer pre-treatment assessment and clearance (e.g., Bone Marrow Transplant, Head & Neck Cancer) will also be incorporated. Opportunities for research focused on quality and outcomes are readily available.

Psycho-oncology – Head and Neck Cancer (2 days/week)

Fellows complete inpatient and outpatient evaluations with brief interventions for most patients undergoing treatment for head and neck cancers. In addition to completing these evaluations, fellows are integrated within a multidisciplinary team of surgical, radiation, and medical oncologists, advanced practice providers, nurse navigators, speech-language pathologists, and registered dieticians. Fellows will also complete pre-surgical evaluation and clearance for patients referred for cochlear implants. There may be an opportunity to participate in ongoing research activities.

Clinical Research (2 days/week)

The fellow will assist with ongoing research projects with Lisa Matero, PhD. The primary project is to assist in evaluating a brief, behavioral intervention for patients with chronic pain that is integrated in a primary care clinic. The fellow will assist with recruitment and delivery of the intervention for this project. Other responsibilities include literature searches, data entry, and preparation of abstracts for conference presentations and manuscripts for publication. Possibilities for other research topics include bariatric surgery, transplant, pain, and/or integrated care. The fellow may also have the opportunity to develop his/her own small project. Didactic training in human subjects research, research methods, manuscript writing, and grant writing may be possible.

Clinical Research (2 days/week)

The fellow will be matched with a research mentor to assist with ongoing research projects.  The fellow will be expected to lead at least one research presentation and one manuscript. Options for ongoing projects include examination of medical risk factors for suicide, investigation of long-term opioid use for patients with medical conditions, and evaluation of healthcare utilization for patients with mental health and medical comorbidities. The fellow will also learn to assist with recruitment and data collection in an active trial or prospective study. Didactic training in human subjects research, research methods, manuscript writing, and grant writing will be included.
