Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does my child lose any of his/her rights?
A: All patients and their guardians have rights as outlined by the Illinois Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Code. It is very important that we protect your child’s rights and assure that there is an indicated need for inpatient hospitalization. A Statement of Patient Rights is provided in your admission packet.
Q: In what way is my insurance company involved?
A: To assure that we are respecting our patient’s rights regarding the need for ongoing inpatient treatment, your insurance company (e.g., Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Public Aid, etc) will review the clinical reason (e.g., danger to self or others) for remaining in the hospital. Our treatment team will advocate for your family.
Q: I am in the process of looking for a residential placement, can my child stay in the hospital until I find a placement?
A: For those guardians awaiting residential placement for their child, your child will return to your home once they no longer meet criteria for inpatient admission. The Illinois Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Code prohibit hospitals from keeping a patient within the facility when they no longer meet criteria.
Q: Am I responsible financially if I refuse to pick up my child from the hospital?
A: Yes, you will be responsible for the charges from the time the case is denied by your insurance carrier until the time DCFS takes custody.
Q: Will my child be supervised?
A: Your child will be supervised by trained staff 24 hours a day with a minimum level of observation of visual checks by staff every 15 minutes to assure patient safety.
Q: What if I want to transfer my child to another hospital?
A: Please tell your assigned inpatient therapist that you want a transfer to another inpatient facility and we will assist you with this process.
