Name Alicia CooksonCandidate Number L.O. 1 Initiate and develop a creative project proposal using a range of critical and contextual perspectives and approaches My final major project was based around the concept of relationships. I have developed this theme through a variety of mediums; from the relationships of formal elements such as line and colour to the physical and emotional connections between people. I have produced a cohesive body work which explores collage, print, poetry and conceptual art. I have aimed to maintain the theme of relationships throughout my work by making links to previous pieces of work once I have adapted and tested new pieces of work. I would say that I have slightly drifted from my original proposal because I initially wanted my work to reflect a sense of identity which incorporated elements of the human condition. However, I did not think it was appropriate to make the theme too complex, I felt that it would have become too confusing to understand. Therefore, I began to only look at human relationships later within my project. The underlying principles which have driven my work are my own experiences of relationships, especially with my family and also unsuccessful romantic relationships. L.O.2 Use research, analysis and evaluation to develop ideas and solutions for a creative project As part of my research, I have observed different films, images and animations which explore relationships. I have looked particularly at Quentin Tarrentino films which have majorly influenced my creative direction. I began to analyse the body language between the characters in his films and how they portray a relationship to the audience. The music video for the song ‘Love Letters’ shows Elvis dancing with a female partner which also shows a more vibrant form of a relationship through the art of dance. It’s main focus looks at the stereotypical male and female identity with the 1960’s with a modern-day twist as a result of various editing techniques such as speeding up certain scenes to make them seem faster and more vibrant. During my final major project, I have negotiated a few ethical issues throughout. When I was investigating secondary resources, I found that when asking for other people’s personal and intimate relationships opposed the issue of privacy. For what I was aiming to create needed to be very raw and emotive which required a selection of experiences. To combat the issue of privacy, I would aim to get both parties consent to using their relationship as part of my research. If this wasn’t always successful I made the decision to keep both individuals involved anonymous to avoid embarrassment or any other invasion of privacy. Also, I decided to only use an exert of what was submitted to me (their way of consent) via Instagram which removes the given context. L.O.3 Use appropriate methods and specialist skills in the realisation of a creative project When I originally started this course, I aimed to do Graphic Design and never imagined myself in the Fine Art pathway. In terms of subject knowledge, I have found it quite challenging to move from one discipline to another one. I have learnt so much about Fine Art in general (e.g. how to stretch paper correctly) and about art history. This knowledge has supported my development and understanding of the course and the final major project, in terms of both the theoretical and the practical aspects of art.I think what has benefitted me greatly is having an open-mind I have tried almost every discipline, from drawing to collaging to painting to photography. Which has driven my process further because it has allowed me to discover the realisation of my creative project a lot faster than being restricted to one medium.I have worked to my strengths throughout this final project and have started in more traditional forms of making e.g. drawing and have then developed my skills to more digital and lens-based forms of media. That’s what I think gives my work a physical embodiment the presentation of the work will always be linked and contain meaning.Artists such as Tracey Emin and Christopher Wool have inspired the minimal yet bold aesthetic within my work, Emin’s emotional works have inspired the content on the receipt and Wool’s black and white pieces have dictated the basic colour scheme within my art.L.O.4 Integrate practical, theoretical and technical understanding to solve complex problems in order to realise a creative project Once I’d realised what it was that I intended to create, it was a matter of refinement. That meant choosing the most suitable way of presenting my concept of receipts to my intended audience. I had explored a variety of practical ways of designing my receipts, I initially explored writing out the extracts of text using different forms of typography on the back of old receipts. I personally felt that the receipts lacked composition due to their messy nature. Therefore, I tried them in a digital format which was successful in terms of their structure yet lacked an emotive strain. This then lead me onto opting for a blend of the two idea I began to use a typewriter to compose my receipts. This felt like the perfect solution because they would be hand-rendered yet still had some form of structure within them. The next issue was what paper do I print them onto? I tried newsprint paper, receipt paper and printer paper and found that the receipt paper was the most successful because it was more authentic and produced clearer results.Overall, I am happy with my final outcome because it captures all the needed characteristics in order to convey a relationship without it becoming too complex. This has been executed in a thoughtful yet minimal style of presentation.L.O.5 Plan, organise and maintain records of progress in the production of a creative project I found that by writing a proposal was a useful document because it was an effective way of articulating what you intended to create. I used my proposal as a reference because it enabled me to see whether I had stuck to my initial ideas or whether I had slight drifted from them.My work plan has supported my timely success of this body of work as it has enabled me to map out a rough idea of what I want to achieve at the end of my final major project. I had to negotiate and allocate certain amounts of time to research, experimentation, refinement and consolidating my final outcome. I have been responsible for my own learning, I have had to create a balance between producing practical work in college time and using my independent study to research and record my ideas on my blog. I have also had to take initiative in terms of decision-making to overcome obstacles within the progress of my project. For this I had to assert and make clear what my objectives were for my final outcome and problem-solve how I was going to achieve this.L.O.6 Maintain records of critical analysis, reflection and evaluation to inform own learning Tutors constantly gave me feedback on my project which helped informed my decision-making and their analysis of how to execute my work in a more professional light which was useful from a student’s perspective. Reflection and analysis have allowed me to test other ways of working and other possibilities to produce more developed and thoughtful pieces. At times it becomes hard to distance yourself from your practice because you get so engrossed in the development of your concept that it’s hard to see how to improve. That’s why I think having a blog has been beneficial for analysis as it allows you to take a step backwards from your own artwork and see it from a neutral perspective. I have achieved a lot during this project, although I feel that I could have pushed my receipts even further by experimenting with different mediums, for example in my work plan I mentioned about doing screen-prints. If I had more time I could have screen printed my work onto these receipts and could have used it as another possibility which would contribute towards the refinement of my receipts. L.O.7 Use appropriate techniques and methods to communicate and present a creative project to an intended audience For my final piece I made a series of receipts titled ‘My Heart, Your Lips’ which communicate extracts of break-up text messages as a collective piece of work. I have explored numerous possibilities of how to convey the underlying message that “We all experience relationships, we have all been hurt, yet all of our relationships are individual, subjective and unique. But they have become such ignored and disposable objects in today’s society”. And I felt the presentation of the receipts was a major aspect and that the impact also needed to reflect this message. Initially I wanted my piece to be an installation with thousands of receipts – but I had to consider time constraints, ethical issues such as paper waste and spacial factors to examine. Also, I debated whether I should frame them and have that contrast between such a disposable object and a pristine, framed, souvenir of a relationships. Or do I nail them to the wall and have quite a raw expression of relationship?Relationships are very complex and that sometimes in order to make a bold statement – less is more. Therefore, I opted for a minimal aesthetic and I have achieved this through my final piece being a collection of seven receipts nailed to the wall with a red line gradually fading symbolising the end of a relationship as it fades to nothing, hung in a straight line to show a sense of uniformity. However, the length of the receipts demonstrates the individuality of the relationships. ................
