Student Success Research Project Instructor GuidelinesThe success of your class is dependent upon your understanding and facilitation of the Student Success Research Project. If anything is unclear, contact Dr. Johnson in advance of presenting the various parts to your class. For the instructor guidelines: I am referencing my example syllabus that is posted on the faculty resource page. If you are following these guidelines, adjust per the flow of your section. On 9/2: I will be introducing students to the student success research project. Remember, this project is both individual and group. So, I will explain my plan of action to help you model. On this date, I have already pre-assigned the groups to their assigned topic; thus, students will receive their topic and group assignment. You are welcome to allow students to select their topic but remember: for example, you may have 5 groups of 5 different topics then have students sign up.Groups should have 4 to 5 students each. Refer to the student success topic list below for great suggestions! Note: This is college based; thus, students research must be about the college experience. Not K-12, not adult education or anything outside of the traditional college experience. For the Research Summary Worksheets, students are doing this individually! They are not submitting three worksheets for the group. Each group member is doing research on their assigned topic and locating three peer reviewed articles, then completing three worksheets. The topics are broad and numerous articles exist on these various topics. On this date: I am assigning the Research Summary Worksheets, writing in APA and Avoiding Plagiarism in APA style library modules.Students typically struggle on the Research Summary Worksheets. Remember, the full instructions, video, rubric, examples, are posted in webcourses. In my section: I grade these in about 48 hours then return > discuss in class > then allow students who would like a re-do for more points submitby the following Sunday. This is a nice way to encourage self-efficacy!On 9/16: Students will have the entire class meeting to work on the Research Summary worksheets in-class. This way, I can assist where needed.Introduction of the Literature Review Paper:This date will depend on when you introduce the paper. However, just do not assign the paper. You must plan for a good 15 to 20 minutes to thoroughly discuss the assignment in detail: Remember, the full instructions including templates, video, rubric, examples, are posted in webcourses. On this date, Iam also assign the writing literature review library module. This assignment is also individual. Week of 11/16: On this week you will discuss the Group Component (Discussion Board (if utilized), Power Point, Presentation). Go over the full instructions and play the video in class so everyone is on the same page. Week OF 11/16: Group Power Point Development DayOn this date: the entire class is used for students to work in their groups and develop their power point and engagement activity. This is a required in-class meeting and should not be cancelled or reduced! If they are done, they should practice speaking and/or run through their engagement activity. Plan them into breakout sessions. Remember, each person is responsible for contributing to the power point. Final Week of class: Group Power Point Presentations! The key to success here is make this day exciting and fun. A full class of presentations can easily become boring. While they should be engaging, you as the instructor should also. I would suggest breaking up the time maybe do half then play some music and give them a break. Then finish the other half. Depending on your course schedule, you may be able to split between two days. Following these step by step instructions will ensure you are successful on the facilitation of the Student Success Research Project. If anything is unclear, contact Dr. Johnson.Student Success Research Topics: This list is not exhaustive. All Faculty will be required to submit their topics for approval with their syllabus on August 18.
