With the exception of the overview section of the mobile sector, mobile refers to all service components excluding paging service revenues. Listed below are various terms and acronyms that are found and used in the report to describe and measure mobile services in Canada.MTM is a research product that focuses in the areas of technology ownership and usage. MTM’s research data is leveraged in this section to provide additional insight to mobile usage in Canada. ARPU refers to average revenue per user. However, in the mobile sector, since a user is more commonly referred to as subscriber, the term ARPU is referred to as average revenue per subscriber.CAGR refers to compound annual growth rate, the year-over-year average growth rate of an amount over a specified period of time. EBITDA refers to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. This is one financial metric that measures the profitability of a company.High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) and Long-Term Evolution (LTE) are the protocols or standards used for communications between a mobile phone and cell towers in mobile networks. HSPA is also referred to as 3G (third generation) cellular while LTE is referred to a 4G (fourth generation) cellular. LTE is the current standard that is now widely deployed in most mobile networks. HSPA+, or evolved High-Speed Packet Access, is a form of HSPA that uses technical measures to provide faster transmission speeds.LTE-A refers to long-term evolution advanced. LTE-A is an enhancement of LTE that provides faster data rates and meets the various specifications identified in the International Mobile Telecommunications-Advanced (IMT-Advanced Standard) standard established by the 3GPP as Release 10.Penetration rates represent the number of subscribers divided by the population published by Statistics Canada at year end, unless stated otherwise.Coverage measures the availability of mobile service, by population, and is based on population statistics from the latest census data (2016). Mobile coverage may be provided in one of two ways, either as an on-net service using the network managed by the service provider, or as a roaming service using a network managed by another service provider, usually due to a formal roaming agreement between the user's service provider and the mobile network 3 refers to the three largest mobile service providers in Canada, with respect to revenue and subscriber share. The three providers are Roger, Bell Group of companies and TELUS; this also includes revenue and subscriber data from their flanker or secondary brands.Flanker brands are secondary and tertiary brands that the Top 3 providers use to differentiate their service offerings by marketing and selling services to other consumer segments. Top 3’s flankers includes brands such as Koodo, Fido, Virgin and Chatr.Other service providers include SaskTel, other small incumbent TSPs (telecommunications service providers), resellers, and the remaining new entrants (Freedom Mobile, Videotron and Bragg Communications [Eastlink]).The average churn rate is a measure of subscriber turnover. It is derived by dividing the number of subscribers that have left a wireless service by the total number of wireless service subscribers. The higher the number, the more people are leaving the provider.Postpaid subscribers, and its associated revenues, are customers who may be billed all or in part after use, for example in a monthly bill, and for which overage charges can be incurred. For greater clarity, any pay-in-advance plan where the service provider may bill the customer for some or all charges after use or where the customer may incur overage charges beyond the prepaid balance is treated as a postpaid plan for the purposes of the Code.SMS refers to short message service. This enables users to send and receive text messages of up to 160 characters in length between subscribers.MMS refers to multi-media messaging service. Similar to SMS, this service enables the transmission of multimedia content, such as pictures and videos, between subscribers.ACEPU refers to average capital expenditure per user. This is a new metric introduced in the 2018 report to measure the amount of capital investments associated to each mobile subscriber.Capex refers to capital expenditures. Capex are major investments made primarily to replenish, upgrade and maintain telecommunications networks.Capital Intensity is the ratio of capital expenditures to revenues. This metric measures how much a company spends on its plant and equipment relative to their total revenues.The number of different wireless networks, by province and territory, is based on the ownership of the network and its facilities. If a wireless service provider shares its network in an area where it is the sole provider with another service provider, the area is still considered as being served by one network. In areas where one facilities-based provider is present, this would be considered to be 1 network, 2 networks refer to exactly two facilities-based providers in that particular region, regardless if there are more than two service providers as a result of network sharing arrangements, and so forth.If a wireless service provider shares its network in an area where it is the sole provider with another service provider, the area is still considered as being served by one network.Overage refers to additional units, such as gigabytes, which exceeds a predetermined traffic cap. ................
