Job Opening -Marine Resource Specialist III

Marine Fisheries Commission seeks advisers

This employee will serve as the Captain of the R/V Georgia Bulldog, a 72 foot shrimp trawler, and provide logistical and technical expertise for research and outreach-based operations aboard the vessel. The employee will also act as the vessel operations coordinator for the Brunswick station, which entails supervising operations, maintenance, and repair of the R/V Georgia Bulldog and the station's two smaller research vessels (21 and 24 feet), plus safety equipment, trailers and sampling gear to ensure their safe and efficient operation. The position will supervise and collaborate with crew, researchers and other stakeholders that participate in field events onboard the Bulldog and smaller vessels. This position will serve as a commercial fishing specialist with particular emphasis on shrimping operations. This includes providing technical assistance and training to fishermen and other marine resource

M OREHEAD CITY ? The N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission is looking for commercial and recreational fishermen and scientists to advise it on various fisheries issues.

Two regional advisory committees ? Northern and Southern ? and three standing advisory committees ? Finfish, Habitat and Water Quality, and Shellfish/Crustacean ? review matters referred to them by the commission, such as draft fishery management plans, and recommend management strategies. Committees may also bring issues pertaining to their region or subject matter to the commission's attention.

The Marine Fisheries Commission chairman appoints members to these committees for three-year terms, and several terms will expire in January.

To be qualified to serve on a committee,

users on subjects relevant to operating and maintaining commercial fishing vessels in a safe, legal and efficient manner such as, but not limited to electronics, welding, net and gear repair, TED installation, and/or permitting. The position will collaborate with faculty and staff to design and lead fisheries-related extension programs relevant to current issues along the coast and assist with the maintenance and care of the Brunswick station.

applicants must not have had a significant fisheries violation within the past three years.

Individuals interested in serving as an adviser should be willing to attend meetings at least once every two months and actively participate in the committee process, which includes reviewing scientific documents and issue papers to make recommendations on management strategies. Advisers will be reimbursed for travel and other expenses incurred in relation to their official duties.
