TEACHING/LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Introduction: Can we afford it?

Use a puppet to introduce a scenario for the children to discuss. Billy had been learning to tap dance since he was five years old and wished he could dance

on the London stage.

One day he rushed in from dance school “Mum, Mum, you’ll never guess what Mrs Francis has asked me to do. There is going to be an audition in London and Mrs

Francis says I should go for the weekend. It only costs £250. Can I go mum, please?”

Billy’s Mum looked at Billy, she had to do a lot of thinking, £250 for a weekend was a lot of money. What do you think Billy’s mum will say?

In pairs the children need to think of reasons why mum might say yes or no. As a class discuss how people make decisions about why they can or cannot afford

to buy something. Introduce the words income and expenses. Briefly discuss the concept of savings and why it is important to save money.

MAIN TEACHING AND LEARNING

Activity 1: Developing Economic Well-being

During this activity the children will need to work in groups of the same learning style so the teacher will need to have organised this in advance of the

lesson.

Scenario for the children to discuss: “You have been given £1000 to spend on a community from a country of your choice“. Which country and community would you

choose? Should you find out what the community needs and/or wants rather than just giving them what you think they should have?

If the class are not already studying a country it may be necessary to discuss countries that they have studied previously or have heard about through the

media. In small groups the children need to research their chosen country and identify an area of need using:

The internet

Books

Charity information packs

Teachers notes

Poster packs

Talking to an adult or peers

Once they have identified the need for their chosen country they need to identify how much it would cost to purchase items to address these needs. WorldAid,

WaterAid, FoodAid and OXFAM provide posters that show the cost of purchasing animals, water pumps, education and food for different countries. It may be

useful to have these ready for the children to use as time will be limited.

DIFFERENTIATION

PLENARY

In each group the children need to present their findings to meet their learning style. This could be an oral presentation, artwork, a factual poster or a

drama activity. The teacher could then take digital photos as a tool for assessment and record of the learning style used by the children in the class.

KEY QUESTIONS

How do people make decisions about what they can and can’t afford? (Introduce the concept of a budget and paying for essentials first.)

How do charities decide on where and how to spend their resources?

How do people decide which charity to support?

ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING

Through the plenary session, check children’s ability to present their findings.
