Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) and Book Talks

Required Outside Reading and Book Talks

Studies have shown that reading on a regular basis not only broadens readers' knowledge, but it also improves vocabulary and

enhances writing skills. Because I want you to reap those same benefits and to know the rewards of reading, I am having you read

outside of class from a list of selected works (such as the AP List, the Western Canon, etc.). While there will not be written

reports based on your extra reading**, you will be responsible for discussing your books with me in order to get your "book talk"

test score each nine (9) weeks.

Requirements

1. Select your work from the lists in my room (permission might be given to a work outside these lists). Submit your choice on an index card, including your name/date/period to me ASAP.

2. You will read and individually discuss with me this selection as part of your PAP English II course work. This will be done each NINE WEEKS’ period.

3. Readings must be in book form. You are free to choose fiction and nonfiction books you want to read. If there is any question as to whether or not a selection is acceptable to use for your book talk, check with me before reading it.

4. If the entire selection is not read, you may consult with me about approval to present what you have completed (requests for this should be exceptional).

5. You must have your work in your possession when you discuss it with me. These discussions may be done before/after school or during my conference period or lunch, by appointment. Because you know that you have numerous opportunities to do this assignment, there will be no excuses for not having it done by the deadline, which is posted each grading period.

6. It is a good idea to schedule a meeting with me as soon as possible after completing the reading.

7. The ROR book talk will count as a test grade each nine (9) weeks.

** If you would prefer to present your book in another format, please check with me. I may from time to time change the “book talk” to another assignment.
