The Benefits Of Time Management

The Benefits Of Time ManagementCourtney HumphreyStenberg CollegeThe Benefits Of Time ManagementUnlike high school university is not completely structured and students often find themselves having to be self-reliant when it comes to their academic success. This newfound responsibility in their education leaves more room for flexibility in deciding how to delegate their time. However the way in which they choose to spend that time ultimately determines their execution of it. Having strong organizational skills, being self-disciplined and a hard worker are all characteristics that make a great student. However the number one quality that set students apart is their time management skills. This skill is a vital tool which will determine the success of one’s academic and professional career. Why is time management so important? If we allow time to control us we will never have enough of it although it we learn to control time we can use it to our advantage. Student who possess time management skills will flourish in university learning because they will be able to control their time. This tool is especially important in on-line learning because students are self-regulated and therefore must know how to control their time. Having excellent time management skills will ultimately help reduce one’s stress, improve students quality of life and in turn help them succeed in the on-line psychiatric nursing program at Stenberg College. It is imperative for students who are entering the psychiatric nursing program to know how to manage their time effectively so their stress levels will be decreased. Stress arises when we feel that we are not in control however if we are in control of our time we will not feel this way. If students learn how to manage their time effect they are more likely to not feel overwhelmed by the high demands of the program. If stress reaches a dangerously high level this can result in a burn out. As students it is or responsibility to control our stress levels so burnouts do not occur. Once students are in complete control of their time they will begin to feel calm and therefore in control of their life. If students utilize time management they can reduce their stress and in turn improve their success in the program. According to Robert Dipboye and Amanda Phillips in College Students’ Time Management: Correlations With Academic Performance and Stress people who receive time management training report immediate and long term benefits. The research showes that subjects increased their self-efficiency and spent more time being stress free (Macan, Shahani, Dipboye, & Phillips, 1990, p. 760). Therefore if students receive time management training it would consequently result in them also being stress free. If students are stress free it would allow them more time to concentrate on important tasks and would increase their productivity. It is apparent that when time management skills are used to reduce stress it can have a positive effect on students. In order to enjoy a quality life it is important for students to find time to do the things that bring them happiness. Living a balanced life is also essential in the maintenance of student’s sanity in the psychiatric nursing program. At times however it might seem like there are not enough hours in the day to complete required tasks and enjoy free time. That is why time management plays an essential part in student’s quality of life. It is hypothesized that people who spend more time engaging in time management tools such as making lists, planning, organizing and delegating would report a higher satisfaction in work and life (Macan, Shahani, Dipboye, & Phillips, 1990, p. 761). The results indicated that students who “engaged more frequently in the mechanics of time management…also reported [a] higher satisfaction with life”(Macan, Shahani, Dipboye, & Phillips, 1990, p. 765). Students also reported that the more demands that were put on them the more psychologically dissatisfied they felt. Moreover, if poor time management skills consequently decrease student’s life satisfaction then good time management skills should therefore increase quality of life. Successfulness in the psychiatric nursing program at Stenberg College is reliant on how well students manage their time. According to Stenberg’s student handbook “those with poor time management skills may need to learn how to stop procrastinating and manage their time” (RDPN student handbook, 2013, p. 6) which demonstrates that time management skills are a prerequisite for the program. Stenberg College would not warn students about the significance of time management unless they felt it was dependent on student’s success in the program. Pallof and Pratt argued that online learning also requires “two to three times the amount of time investment than face-to-face course[s]” (as cited in Lynch & Dembo, 2004, para. 17). Since the psychiatric nursing program is offered on-line it is crucial that students are self- regulated when it comes to their studies. This means knowing how to properly prioritize assignments based on how much time students have to complete the required tasks. In fact R. Lynch and M. Dembo in The Relationship Between Self-Regulation and Online Learning in a Blended Learning Context point out that “Students who use their time efficiently are more likely to learn and/or perform better than students who do not have good time management skills” (Lynch & Dembo, 2004, para. 18). Thus one can assume that psychiatric nursing students who use time management in their program will perform better than students who lack this skill. Time management also increases student’s productivity and it addition Campbell and Stevens (1992) agree that it increases academic performance (as cited in Misra & McKean, 2000, para. 4). Students who lack time management skills would be unsuccessful in the program because it is a required variable on their path to success. Furthermore, without time management skills students would not be able to flourish in many aspects of their life. Excellent time management skills allows students to been in control of their life both personally and academically. Without this fundamental skill students would not be able to control their stress, find time for themselves and ultimately not be successful in the psychiatric nursing program. Thankfully knowing how to properly use time management to our advantage allows us to achieve our desired goals. ReferencesLynch, R., & Dembo, M. (2004).
