Student Support Team Newsletter-183515-198755Random acts of kindness are a hot topic in science and psychology today. Study after study has proven that compassionate giving and benevolence are not only great for the recipient, but the giver as well. Here are some facts and links for more information:Giving not only makes you feel good, it also makes you stronger.1We feel happier when we perform acts of kindness.2People who are kind and compassionate are usually the most successful.2We increase [children’s] feelings of happiness and well-being, reduce bullying, and improve their friendships by teaching them to be givers of kindness.2Random acts of kindness don't just benefit the ones you gift, but also help your own mental health.3When you are grateful and practicing random acts of kindness… the result is inner calm, clarity of thinking and a heart full of love.4Physiological benefits [of kindness] include:[Strengthened] immune systemImproved Cognitive PerformanceIncrease in EnergyLower Heart RateBalanced cortisol levels which result in less internal stressMore likely to live a longer and more satisfied lifeLaughter and inner joy resulting in decreased stress hormones; lower blood pressure; diminished pain.4When people benefit from kindness they “pay it forward” by helping others who were not originally involved, and this creates a cascade of cooperation that influences dozens more in a social network.5The flow of good and desirable properties like ideas, love and kindness is required for human social networks to endure, and, in turn, networks [like The Honey Foundation!] are required for such properties to spread.5Helping a neighbor, volunteering, or donating goods and services results in a ‘helper’s high,’ and you get more health benefits than you would from exercise or quitting smoking.6 ??Those who spend money on others report much greater happiness than those who spend it on themselves.6The most powerful way to increase your short-term feelings of happiness is to perform random acts of kindness to others.7Five [random acts of kindness] in a week will increase your happiness for up to three months.7‘Passing it forward’ is not just good for another, but in the long run benefits everyone around you.8 acts of kindness are a hot topic in science and psychology today. We know the benefits yet too often, we make a quick retort or comment that would have been better left unsaid. We choose an attitude of “what’s in it for me?” instead of “what can I do for you?”. The challenge is to overcome the hurt and pain we may be experiencing, set it aside, dig deep and choose to respond with love. It takes character to show grace to someone who has not shown grace to you. We want TABS to be a safe and happy place for students to learn and feel respected. We know each person has control of what comes out of his or her mouth or whether he or she use their hands to help or hurt so I want to challenge each student and adult to the following:Try at least one random act of kindness towards someone each day. Treat each other the way you want to be treated.Replace a negative comment with a positive compliment.Be grateful. Find things throughout the day for which to be thankful. Listen more. Speak less.Ask yourself what you need to do better instead of pointing out flaws in everyone else.Focus on your goals instead of wasting your time and energy on what the latest gossip is.648970-236855004573905-617855Research Shows:00Research Shows:College and Career Readiness -67945201295Available Scholarships* Comcast Leaders and Achievers scholarship - $2,500 – Deadline: December 7* Horatio Alger Association scholarship: visit for more information* Fort Worth Scottish Rite Foundation: See Ms. Igodan for a copy of the scholarship applicationFor a copy of the full FWISD scholarship bulletin please visit: Scholarship offers to TABS seniors to date: $15,100,867.00Empowerment Tour: A few weeks ago, about 15 of our seniors attended the Empowerment Tour sponsored by Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).
