Course Description: This course is a combination 50% Literary and 50% Transactional. Literary: Students will deal with language in a stylistic and emotional nature by reading a variety of literature. The emphasis is on analysis of poetry, novels, short stories and plays. Students deal with a more practical application of language, with a focus on a wide scope of writing styles. Forms of writing studied include newspapers, magazines, articles, memoirs and biographies. The emphasis is on analysis of non-fiction. Students will write a Provincial standards examination at the end of this course, worth 30% of their final mark.

Course expectations

• You will arrive to class on time

• Assignments will be handed in on time. If you hand assignments in on each individual due date, you will have the opportunity to get my feedback and resubmit them. If you hand in an assignment past its due date, you may not resubmit.

• If you area absent, you will find out what you missed from the website, classmates or set up an appointment with me before or after school.

Extra help is available at 8 am in room 201 or during slot 4.

Teachers Note:

There is going to be a lot of in class work this semester and a few take home and typing assignments to be completed on your own time. In order to be successful, you need to be in class and get assignments in by the required due dates. Do not hesitate to email me or come and see me if you are having difficulty with an assignment. I want to help you to become a better reader, writer and thinker by the end of the semester and provide you with the skills to be successful in whatever future endeavors you may choose to pursue. Ask lots of questions and do your best to take “something” from all assignments and lectures. I look forward to working with you over this semester!
