Prerequisites: (1) A grade of 'C' or better in College Algebra MAT 117, or (2) equivalent to MAT 117 and completion of department Unified Placement Exam. The placement exam is taken online and must be completed by the end of the first week of classes.

Placement Exam: Students must take the Unified Mathematics Placement Test outside of class on the Internet by the end of the first week of class. The URL is

.

This exam will emphasize required algebraic skills as well as assessing the student's general level of current mathematical ability.

Graphing Calculator: A graphing calculator is required for this course. If you have a graphing calculator you may use it. If not, please talk with your instructor for a recommendation. Examples of highly recommended models are the TI-83/84 calculators or Casio fx-9750G Plus.

Graphing Calculator Workshops-It is very important that you attend either of these sessions:

See scheduled time.

Final Exam: The final exam will be given according to the ASU Final Exam Schedule; the link is shown above. There will be no make ups given for the final, and no finals will be rescheduled for personal reasons, including non-refundable airplane tickets. (Refer to the last page of this syllabus.)

Exams: You will take three mid-term exams during the semester. Each will involve a mix of mechanical skills and conceptual reasoning.

• The best possible preparation of them is regular attendance and completion of assigned homework.

• These exams are to be completed outside of regular class time in the Mathematics Department Testing Center in PSA 21 (basement)

• To be admitted to the Testing Center each student must have a valid ASU Sun Card.

• The testing center is open 8:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. M-Th and 8:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Friday. Make sure you arrive before 6:30 p.m. M-Th or 3:30 p.m. Friday. The Testing Center will not allow for late entry. Arrival before the door closes allows the student one hour and twenty-five minutes to complete the test.

• Students should complete exams as early as possible during the allotted time frame, since the Testing Center can get extremely busy in the afternoons.

• Your calculator memory may be viewed during any exam and will be cleared if anything suspicious is noted. The instructor has the right to regard finding suspicious material in your calculator memory as cheating.
