Welcome to the wonderful world of anatomy and physiology! A class designed to explore one of the most amazing machines ever assembled, of course, we are talking about the human body. During the course of study we will investigate the following topics and systems:

( Orientation of the Body ( Endocrine

( Chemistry of Life ( Cardiovascular

( Cellular Structure & Function ( Blood

( Integumentary ( Lymphatic

( Skeletal ( Respiratory

( Muscular ( Digestive

( Nervous ( Urinary

( Special Senses ( Reproductive

“Mountains are to the rest of the body of the earth, what violent muscular action is to the body of man. The muscles and tendons of its anatomy are, in the mountain, brought out with force and convulsive energy, full of expression, passion, and strength.”

Of course, we are going to approach this class from an introductory perspective. Anatomy and physiology can be quite a challenging discipline on many levels. The intention of this course is to cover the essential information of each unit. Students will have the opportunity to learn thousands of new terms and concepts and may even be considered as learning a whole new language. The challenges will be great, but the rewards will be worth the effort. I am not a fan of rote memorization although there will be some concepts that do require this type of learning. Most of the course will focus on the big ideas of how the body systems work in unison to operate a most perfect organism. The class will feature interactive group lecture & discussion, hands-on laboratories, lab practicals, and other interesting activities. There will be SEVERAL DISSECTIONS! Comparative anatomy is an essential tool to learn about the human body. Dissections will include, but are not limited to frogs, rats, fetal pigs, cats, and various sheep or cow organs. However, mermaids or mermen are very unlikely. Students are REQUIRED TO ATTEND ALL LAB PRACTCAL EXAMS, as there are NO MAKE UP opportunities available.

“Research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing”.

~Wernher Von Braun

So how are we going to go about learning all of these interesting new things? Here’s how! ((((((((((((

Science should be a fun experience for everyone and humor is a great part of any class. However, there is a certain element of danger with chemicals and sharp instruments in the lab (please see LAB SAFETY CONTRACT). A NO TOLERANCE policy of horseplay or unsafe behavior will be observed at all times. Please do your part to ensure a safe, productive, and enjoyable learning environment for all. Let’s have a GREAT YEAR!

No Monkey Business

First of all, you have a nifty CD-ROM called the Essentials of Interactive Physiology. This resource comes in the back of your textbook and is loaded with tons of enrichment and study materials. The CD- ROM has animations tutorials, activities, quizzes, and worksheets available to help you learn difficult concepts concerning the course. Everyone has different learning preferences and this tool has something to meet the needs of any individual. Some course assignments will be required using this resource, so access to a computer and the world wide web is very important for success in the class. Please inform me if this will be a problem so alternative arrangements or assignments can be substituted. Some applications of the Essentials of Interactive Physiology will be used in class presentations as well. It really is that great of a program! Make sure you check it out. Another fine resource included with the Marieb textbook is The Anatomy and Physiology Place Website. The website has been re-designed and is openly accessible to anyone using a Marieb textbook. This website has excellent interactive learning activities to reinforce the material we cover in class. There are self-practice tests, quizzes, and real case studies for every chapter. Other cool features are the “Focus on Careers” and “Ask an Expert” links. There is also a complete glossary of terms with flashcards to help practice learning the language of Anatomy and Physiology. The class really does have plenty of support material available. How much or how little they are used is up to you. I hope you find time to take advantage of it. Here is how to access the site: Go to

Search available books and click on the cover of your Marieb textbook.

You are ready to go.

Find all sorts of web support from these materials.

Have No Fear! Plenty of Help is Right Here!

“Imagination was given to man to compensate him for what he is not; a sense of humor to console him for what he is.”

~ Francis Bacon

Okay, this is how I see it. Since this is a mature, junior and senior class, much of the homework burden is going to be left up to you. Reading of 30 – 45 minutes per night should be expected just to keep up with the bare minimum of material in the class. You have several helpful tools to make this more exciting as stated above. Written assignments will not be heavily employed as long as overall quiz and test grades reflect respectable scores (C or better). If scores are low on average, written homework will be INCREASED. Written homework must be turned in on time at the beginning of class. THERE WILL BE NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED! There will be occasional article reading assignments concerning the biological sciences. Textbooks often become outdated in little time. These assignments should keep things interesting and help us stay up with current events in our discipline. Missed assignments or assessments for absences are the responsibility of the STUDENT! Make up arrangements can be made for lunchtime or before or after school. Work must be made up within the week of the absence.

Course Evaluation See the Breakdown below as

mandated by FUSD.

See the Breakdown Below

(As mandated by FUSD)

❖ 85% Broken down as follows:

• 20% Practice (Homework, papers & assignments).

• 20% Performance (Labs, activities, & in-class projects)

• 60% Measurement (Exams, quizzes, & lab practicals)

❖ 15% Final Exam (Cumulative)

Thoughts About Homework

I am looking forward to a very exciting year. Best of luck and may we learn a lot from each other.
