Welcome to Anatomy & Physiology! Prepare to explore, discover, acquire new skills and gain a better understanding of the structures and functions of the human body.

Classroom Expectations

1. Respect yourself. Be prepared to make yourself successful. This includes bringing your book, binder, pencil, colored pencils, a positive attitude and a smile. You should be in your seat at the bell, on task during the hour and listening carefully to instructions throughout the period. Please remain in your seat until dismissed at the end of class. Give you best effort!

2. Respect others. In order for students to be successful a healthy, productive and safe environment must be maintained. This can be accomplished by treating all with kindness and courtesy.

3. Respect the classroom and resources. This includes the property of other students in the room as well as the equipment of the classroom and lab area.

**Cell Phone Policy**

Cell phones will be prohibited in class unless the lesson has integrated technology for an educational purpose. When a cell phone is used inappropriately a single warning will be given. After a verbal warning the teacher will remove the phone and hold onto until the end of the day. If a cell phone is out during a test or quiz the student will receive an automatic zero.

Attendance

As with any course, regular attendance is very important. When a student is not present in class, for any reason, they miss a great deal. Make-up assignments often do not fully replace the benefit a student receives when in attendance and actively participating in the class. Most often a student who struggles with attendance will struggle with this course. When a student has an excused absence they are responsible for obtaining the missed assignments and completing them promptly. A calendar in the classroom provides the students with information of what was done in class. The student has the number of days missed to complete the make-up work. Students who are absent for a test or quiz are expected to complete it upon their return to school. Unexcused absences will result in a loss of credit for assignments missed.

Tardiness

Being tardy to class is disruptive. Consequences for tardiness will follow the school policy:

1st - warning

2nd- warning and parent notification

3rd – warning and parent notification

4th – referral to the Dean of Students

Required Materials

• One three-ring binder (1.5’ or larger) dedicated to A&P only

• Notebook or lined paper that will fit in the binder

• Textbook

• Pencil/Pens

• One set of 24+ colored pencils

Recommended Materials

• 3 x 5 note cards (for making study flashcards)

• Dissection gloves (these are NOT provided for preserved dissection specimens)

Dissections

Dissections are an opportunity to have a unique hands on experience to explore the material the students have been learning. Participation in the dissection is required. Students conduct dissections both individually and with a partner throughout the year. We will be dissecting a variety of smaller specimens during 1st semester and a larger specimen during 2nd semester.

1st Semester Outline

During the first semester we will study the following topics:

Chapter 1- Introduction to Anatomy & Physiology

Chapter 3-Cells (Student Self-Paced Review Packet)

Chapter 4- Tissues

Chapter 5- Integumentary System

Chapter 6- The Skeletal System

Study Habits

Due to the laboratory nature of this course, most of the work will be completed during class time, however students should expect to spend time outside of class studying. Striving to develop appropriate study habits will be essential to being successful in this course. Approximately 20-30 minutes, 4-5 days per week, with reading the textbook, taking notes and completing homework assignments, constructing and studying flashcards, reviewing lecture notes and preparing for quizzes and tests.

*Numerous resources have also been included on my website for additional practice and review!

Grading Policies

Card marking grades will be determined by weighted averages in the following areas:

Major Assessments 45%

-Unit tests, chapter tests, quizzes

Classwork 40%

-Includes labs, dissections,

projects, participation

Homework 15%

-Not every assignment will be collected for points

but are essential for practice.

*Card marking grades are based on the straight scale (100-90%=A, 89-90%=B, 79-70%=C, 69-60%=D) Card marking grades are NOT rounded up (a 79.9% is a C+). Semester grades will be based upon the average of the three card marking grades and the semester exam grade in accordance with school policy: 80% from the three card marking grades and 20% from the semester exam.

*Late work will only be accepted one day late for half credit.

*Student grades can be accessed through Family Access on huronvalley.k12.mi.us.
