AAMSSA would like to take the opportunity to thank the Executive Committee members whose term has come to an end for their hard work and commitment to building and growing AAMSSA into what it is today.

A huge thank you to Dr Cobus van Niekerk for his dedication and commitment during his term as president of AAMSSA. We thank him for his leadership and personal investment in AAMSSA. His warmth, humour and huge heart for people and Aesthetic medicine, as well as his passion for medical ethics will always be remembered. Dr Cobus continues to serve as Past President and will be as actively involved as always. Thank you Cobus! We salute you!!

Welcome Newly Elected Executive Committee 2019 - 2021

AAMSSA extends a warm welcome to our newly elected AAMSSA Executive Committee Members for the Term 2019 - 2021: Debbie Norval (President), Cobus van Niekerk (Past President), Alek Nikolic (Vice President), Riekie Smit (Secretary), Michelle Westcott (Treasurer), Alastair Clark, Shahien Dollie, Heidi Frere, Portia Gumede, Gerhard van Niekerk, Deepa Parbhoo, Mary Gene Manthata, Jacques Snyman, Levashni Naidoo (Dermatologist) and Nerina Wilkinson (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon)

AAMSSA is grateful for their willingness to serve on the Executive Committee 2019 ? 2021. A society's life blood is made up of members who are willing to contribute actively towards achieving its constitutional objectives.

The new president,

Dr Debbie Norval, will

lead the new exco for the

term 2019 ? 2021. AAMSSA is

proud to introduce you to a

well-equipped president. Dr

Debbie Norval graduated as a

medical doctor from the

University

of

the

Witwatersrand in 1991. She obtained a Diploma

in Palliative Medicine through the University of

Wales UK, followed by a Master of Philosophy in

Palliative Medicine from the University of Cape

Town, and has worked at Hospice

Witwatersrand for 14 years.

Dr Norval obtained an Advanced Diploma in

Aesthetic Medicine through the Foundation for

Professional Development in 2012.

She holds a City and Guilds Diploma in Adult Teaching and Training and is a trainer for Genop SA. She is the AAMSSA Journal Club leader and convener of the Johannesburg Aesthetic Doctors Journal Club. She serves on the Ethics and Professionalism committee of SAAHSP (South African Association of Health and Skincare Professionals) Over and above her role as president of AAMSSA she also serves on the Medico-legal and Ethics and Scientific Committees, and is part of the AAMSSA Aesthetic Nursing and Regenerative Medicine working groups. Dr Debbie Norval is committed to building on the past successes of the society by keeping its members updated with the changes in the regulatory environment, ethics and educational initiatives within the field of aesthetic medicine. These updates will be communicated through the society's website aestheticdoctors.co.za as well as our newsletters, social media platforms, and the society's office.

2019 Achievements:

Well done to Dr Cobus van Niekerk (AAMSSA past president) on another successful AAMSSA AGM and executive committee election held at the AMCSA 2019 Congress. Dr Michelle Westcott, AAMSSA Treasurer, presented the healthy financial status of AAMSSA and Dr Cobus van Niekerk presented the annual report reflecting the successes driving the healthy financial status of the society. Congratulations to the AMCSA team, Dr Riekie Smit, AAMSSA members, attending delegates and all trade partners on another successful Congress. The AMCSA Congress is an annual event sharing and promoting Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Medicine training of international calibre. AMCSA is also dedicated to the prestigious charity gala event.

Society Objectives

The Primary Objectives of the Organisation are:

To promote the science, regulation and practice of Aesthetic and Anti-aging Medicine through ongoing trainings, education, congresses, courses, treatment guidelines and medical literature in this field of medicine to medical doctors in Southern Africa.

To improve collaboration between aesthetic practitioners, dermatologists, plastic surgeons and other specialists involved in this field. AAMSSA exco has representatives of these specialties to guide the society on areas of common interest and to benefit the team involved on aesthetic patient care.

To improve relationships between AAMSSA and medical schools, public and private institutions (FPD and other training institutes), government authorities (HPCSA, SANC), medical schemes, medical insurance companies, the medical profession generally, and the public.

The Secondary Objectives of the Organisation are:

To assist members with all issues pertaining to Aesthetic and Anti-aging medicine, where possible.

To collaborate with other organisations with similar objectives.

Important Notice

Medical Device & IVD companies can continue to:

Supply medical devices and in-vitro diagnostics (IVD's) according to a bonus system, rebate system, or any other incentive scheme or sampling is allowed until 18 December 2021. This exemption is immediately effective from the date signed by the Minister.

Medical Devices and Related Substances are exempted from Sections 18A and 18B of the Medicines and Related Substances Act, 1965 (Act No 101 of 1965) published 18 December 2018.

AAMSSA Ongoing focus:

1. Collaborating with SAAHSP in developing service standards for beauty therapists and Somatologists working in the Aesthetic Medical industry, including the development of a new designation of Dermal Aesthetician.

2. Setting up of the Aesthetic Nursing Working Group to establish service standards and support for nurses in the industry.

3. Educating members and the public on unsafe and unethical practices.

4. Growing the AAMSSA Journal club support network.

5. Collaboration with HPCSA addressing, unprofessional advertising by medical practitioners on social media platforms: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter.

6. The continued monitoring and identification of potentially harmful products, skincare ranges or devices purporting aesthetic outcomes that are inappropriately marketed to Somatologists or the general public.
