Letter and Sound of the Week: “Nn” Nyle Noodle

Themes of the Week: Halloween

Words of the Week: can, go

Dear Kindergarten Families:

Halloween excitement is in the air! We are having fun with many activities around this event, and we will be decorating our treat bags and a haunted house centerpiece for our party next Tuesday!

Language Arts: We are reading many Halloween stories and poems. When reading stories to your child, ask them to retell the story in sequence with as much detail as they can remember.

Letters to review at home: Ss, Mm, Rr, Tt, Bb, Nn

Sight Words: I, see, am, a, the, by, my, like, to, can. go

“Juicy” vocabulary from “When Sophie Gets Angry, Really, Really Angry”: snatch, furious, comfort, welcome

Reading Workshop – Our readers learned how to take care of books and follow the reading workshop procedures each day. They are using the “witch” fingers I gave them to point at each word while reading, and they are excited about finding sight words! While they have a little quiet reading, I am able to meet with individuals on their own personal reading skills.

Math: We are practicing patterns and the children made a spider with patterned legs and pasted a pattern strip. At the end of this marking period some of our goals include being able to recognize and write the numerals 1-10, count to 30, recognize and make and extend AB patterns, and know positional words (ex.: above, below, first, middle, last, etc).

Science: Last week your young scientists sorted items by their texture, using words to describe how things feel. This week they estimate and then compare the weight of different objects using a balance scale.

Technology: The students are enjoying the computer lab weekly, learning to type in their login names and passwords, working with some fun, educational software, including RAZ kids. They interact with my classroom Smartboard by highlighting, circling and underlining different parts of a sentence, counting with the 100 chart, and singing our calendar songs. Most days they have a 15-minute iPad center in the classroom that includes several education apps.

Bucket-Fillers: There is a book we read about how to fill people’s invisible “buckets” by being kind and saying nice things to them, in turn filling your own “bucket.” We try not to dip people’s buckets with words or actions that hurt. Each week in the kindergarten hallway showcase, each class will feature one Bucket Filler Student of the Week!

BUCKET FILLER OF THE WEEK: Norah Moses

Have a great week! Mrs. Richards (

Mindfulness Update Week Five

Hello Parents! On Tuesday, in grades K -2 we read the book, Puppy Mind by Andrew Jordan Nance. In this picture book, a young boy discovers his mind is like a puppy, always wandering away, into the past or the future. He sets about learning to train his puppy mind to heel to the present moment. Through remembering to breathe, the boy becomes a stronger and more caring master of his puppy mind, keeping it in the present, if only for a moment. Even the younger kids knew when asked what our mind does for us, “It thinks!” We’re continuing to work with understanding the nature of our attention and how to work with it.

Students in grades 3-5 had a discussion and practice around empathy. We imagined a couple different scenarios out on the playground and shared how when we want others to feel good, it makes us feel good.

On Thursday, students practiced being mindful of their emotions. Being mindful of our emotions can be helpful. If we’re experiencing an emotion like anger or sadness that might feel bad, we can decide how to respond to it in a calm and healthy way. When we’re mindful of pleasant emotions, like happiness or joy, it can make us appreciate them more!

As a reminder, if you’d like to practice mindfulness with your student, ask your teacher about signing up for Inner Explorer (it’s free!) and is a great way for you to learn more about mindfulness and what your student is learning. You can receive a link to the audio tracks the students listen to so you can practice together at home.

Thank you to those who came to parent night. I hope you found it informative. As always, please feel free to contact me if you have anything further you’d like to discuss: kristinervin@.

One final note, on October 27th, learn about using mindful games to cultivate mindfulness within your family. Susan Kaiser Greenland, best-selling author of The Mindful Child will be presenting at Groves High School in Birmingham on her new book Mindful Games. If you’re interested, you can register here: .
