Comments: Another wonderful title from UK designer Bliss who never disappoints with her children’s designs. This title’s patterns are stepped by difficulty. Other Bliss titles should be considered.

Comments: This second edition has been revised and updated. A peek inside on Amazon shows an extensive index of step-by-step instructions for knitting and crocheting techniques. These two needle forms are usually not featured together but sometimes both used in projects. This is a handy reference guide for library collections.

Knitter’s Review

Comments: There are so many good knitting reference books on the market, but this one, according to Library Journal is a must-have. Written by the editor of Interweave Knits, who has written other recommended titles (The Knitter's Handy Book of Sweater Patterns: Basic Designs in Multiple Sizes and Gauges, [pic]Favorite Socks: 25 Timeless Designs from Interweave, and Getting Started Knitting Socks), Budd is an experienced, well-regarded needlewoman who writes useful, attractive material for knitters of all levels. This 2002 edition was followed by a 2004 edition, The Knitter's Handy Book of Sweater Patterns: Basic Designs in Multiple Sizes and Gauges (ISBN13: 978-1-931499-43-9), also recommended. If only one is to be purchased, my recommendation would be to buy the 2002 edition which includes a variety of patterns for the family, not just sweaters.

5) Title: Big Book of Knitting

Comments: The criticism of this book is that most designs are knit on double pointed needles and almost all are done in chunky to bulky yarn. However the strong recommendation of reviews stems from varied and interesting designs, as well as relatively easy instructions. The short cold season of the south is not enough to put off this purchase, which sounds to please the younger and beginner knitter and those wanting a quick project or gift.

7) Title: Knit and Crochet with Beads

Comments: Considered one of the best titles on this subject, Chin’s book on incorporating beads into knitting is an inspiration through its exquisite designs, offered with step-by-step instructions. No other title in Cobb’s collection addresses this relevant topic.

8) Title: Knitting with Balls: A Hands-on Guide to Knitting for the Modern Man

Comments: Del Vecchio’s website for male knitters comes to print in this highly recommended title. Offering instruction and resources for men, the book also offers 22 interesting patterns that women knitting for men will surely like. There are no knitting books geared for men and very few with knitting patterns for men. The strong recommendations of review sources make this a must.

9) Title: Hand Knitting: New Directions

Author: Ellen, Alison

Publication Date: December 2002

Publisher: Crowood Press, Limited, The

ISBN13: 978-1-86126-534-0

Review References:

LJ Reviews 2003 August #1

Comments: Booklist criticizes this title coverage of the basics as moot as the book is geared for advance knitters who will probably skip this section. For its coverage of designing sweaters and complicated elements and techniques, this title is ideal for large collections. The steep price is justified by the obvious high reader interest on the topic of knitting and few titles geared for the advanced.

10) Title: Barbie Doll and Me: 45 Playful Matching Designs for Knitting

Author: Epstein, Nicky

Publication Date: May 2005

Comments: Coordinating outfits for family and doll make this an appealing title per LJ and high readership of Epstein’s Knits for Barbie doll: 75 fabulous fashions for knitting, already in the collection.

11) Title: Knitting over the Edge: The Second Essential Collection of Decorative Borders Author: Epstein, Nicky

Comments: Epstein is considered one of the leading designers and authorities of today. This follow-up to her Knitting on the Edge is, per Booklist, the “ultimate collection of more than 350 different choices for ribs, cords, appliqués, colors, and a type called nouveau.” Consider more Epstein titles to add to the collection.

12) Title: Felted Knits

Comments: Buying older pattern books is risky for fear of obsolete style. This title caters to the “new” knitter, offering classic and stylish designs, and is still very much fitting for purchase. Try a used copy to save $$$. Also, collection already has a later Ham publication which shows high reader interest.

15) Title: 450 Knitting Stitches, Vol. 2

Author: Harmony Guide Staff

Comments: The Harmony Guide series are notable because of their clear illustrations and photos, and well-written instructions. LJ recommends this and other Harmony titles.

16) Title: Continuous Cables: An Exploration of Knitted Cabled Knots, Rings, Swirls, and Curlicues Knitting

Author: Leapman, Melissa

Publication Date: October 2008

Publisher: Crown Publishing Group

Imprint: Potter Craft

LJ Reviews 2008 August #1

Comments: Highly recommended by Library Journal as a sequel to “Cables Untangled: An Exploration of Cable Knitting” (October 2006) of which I could find no reviews. The publishers synopsis though portrays it as an excellent reference and instructional for anyone interested in cable knitting. Both titles would be ideal but since these are not inexpensive books, this edition would be recommended as it contains a dictionary of cable stitches and graphs that according to LJ “makes it worth to price.”

17) Title: Family Circle Easy Afghans: 50 Knit and Crochet Projects

Contributor: Malcolm, Trisha (Editor)

Publication Date: October 2001

Comments: Both review sources criticize the book’s editorial errors (crochet patterns listed as “knits”) and underestimate of needed skill level. However, the broad appeal of Family Circle patterns, well laid out and illustrated makes this an ideal public library title.

18) Title: Vogue Knitting Designer Knits

Comments: Although this book is a few years old, Vogue Knitting has always been on the cutting edge of fashion, highlighting all the best designers of the day. Recommended by Booklist and Amazon, this book presents 45 sweater patterns that originally appeared in the magazine. All skill levels are covered and the presentation is uncluttered with beautiful models and clear graphs and instructions.

LJ Reviews 2008 April #2

Comments: Highly recommended by both Library Journal and Booklist, this sequel to the author’s “Big Girl Knits” is recommended as a must, especially if the first publication was a success. Cobb does not own either title and so I would recommend beginning with one, and adding the second if reader interest is high.

20) Title: Designing Knitwear

Comments: Although this book is a few years old, U.S. yarn company, Classic Elite, has put together a beautiful collection of knits for the family. Patterns range from simple stockinette pullovers to more complication Aran cardigans. The company has retained some very talented designers to create classic and fresh designs. Recommended by Booklist, Library Journal, and Amazon, even though yarns specified are Classic Elite, ample information for substitutions is given.

All skill levels will find this book useful as the wealth of information provides ongoing ready reference. Because anticipated usage is high, my recommendation is to purchase the hardcover edition.

Comments: Highly recommended by Booklist as the book lives up to it’s. Although PW feels diagrams and photographs could have been more plentiful, both review sources felt the comprehensive coverage of knitting techniques was well covered, catering primarily to the intermediate to advanced knitter. Comments: Although the criticism is that the personal accounts tend to sound repetitious towards the book’s end, the Booklist review reports that “People who love to knit will love this book.” Amazon readers praise the touching and inspirational personal stories recounting how knitting became a part of their lives. Considering the popularity of other similar titles in Cobb’s collection, this recommended title should be added.

Comments: Considered by Library Journal as an appropriate companion to Joelle Hoverson and Anna Williams's Last-Minute Knitted Gifts, already in the collection. This title approaches the enjoyment in “small” projects and gifts not through the amount of time they take, but by the uniqueness of yarn you choose, such as with glittery and glamorous yarn.
