They like to sled, build snowmen, and even have snowball fights. However, sometimes too much snow comes at once. This is called a blizzard, and it can be dangerous instead of fun.??????The biggest American blizzard that affected a single region happened in March 1888. In New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts, more than three feet of snow fell over a few days. Some people could not get out of their houses for a week. Trains could not run, and streets were closed.??????There was also a very surprising blizzard that year. In January, the Plains states were having warm weather for winter. Suddenly, a snowstorm began. No one was ready for it, and it happened as students were leaving schools. Back then, many students on the Great Plains went to one-room schools. All grades sat together in one room. The schools were heated only by wood stoves. When the snow started, some students and teachers were trapped in their schools. After a few hours, they ran out of wood to burn in the stoves. Many teachers were very brave in helping their students. They needed to walk the students to a safe place. They could not see through the heavy falling snow. They tied students together so no one would get lost. Then they led the students to nearby homes so they could be warm.??????The second-biggest blizzard that affected a single region started on Christmas Day in 1947. Like the Great Blizzard of 1888, it happened in the Northeast. Unlike many blizzards, there was little wind. But the snow kept falling and falling. This time, even the subways closed down. It stayed so cold that there was still snow on the ground months later.??????The Blizzard of 1977 was very different. In that storm, the winds were very strong. The wind blew the snow into deep drifts. Some of the snowdrifts were five feet deep. People had to leave their cars in the street. Fire trucks had trouble getting to emergencies. In some places, people had to use snowmobiles to get around.??????The Storm of the Century during 1993 was a very serious blizzard. This storm was special because it was so large. It affected more than twenty states and part of Canada. This storm had a lot of snow and very strong winds. Even Florida had snow from this blizzard. It was extra hard for southern states to have a large storm. These places do not often get much snow. They were not ready for a blizzard. Some cities did not have snowplows to clear their streets. The people there did not know how to handle snow.????1.
