ELEMENTARY EDUCATION

Bachelor of Science in Education (BSE) College of Education & Human Services

The following guide is intended to assist you in planning for your eventual transfer to and graduation from UW Oshkosh. This guide includes only the requirements that can be completed at the UW Colleges. It is not a requirement, nor always advisable, to complete all courses listed in this guide prior to transfer. For a full list of requirements refer to the additional resources included below. Note that this guide is an advisory tool only and subject to change.

UW OSHKOSH ADMISSION

Submit the UW System application, available online at: . Send official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. Send official high school transcripts if fewer than 30 transferable college credits have been earned.

THE MAJOR

Elementary education majors can be certified to teach grades PK-6 (EC-MC), 1-8 (MC-EA) or PK-8 (EC-EA). Students who choose 1-8 or PK-8 are required to have a Minor. See page 6 for list of Minors. Students must complete general education, degree, and major (content area) requirements to complete the degree. Only the general education and degree requirements are addressed in this guide. More information on the requirements for each content area can be found in the UW Oshkosh Bulletin (see last page for link).

To pursue an education major at UW Oshkosh a student must be formally admitted to the Professional Education Program (PEP). Admission to UW Oshkosh does not guarantee admission to the Professional Education Program. This process includes sequential courses, specific deadlines and careful planning. To ensure timely and efficient progress through the Professional Education Program at UWO, it is NOT recommend that students stay at the UW Colleges beyond 24-30 transferable credits.

Requirements for APPLICATION TO TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM

During your first advising appointment at UW Oshkosh, your education advisor will determine if you meet the requirements to apply to the Teacher Education Program. After an advisor has confirmed these requirements have been met, the student will purchase the Tk20 Portfolio software, which is required of all education majors.

Admission to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Successful completion of a minimum of 28 credits Completion of COMM 111 (CTA 103 at UWC) with a grade of C or better Combined GPA of 2.75 (includes transfer grades) Demonstrate Reading, Writing & Math competency by meeting one of the following:

ACT composite score of 23 or higher, or ACT plus Writing composite score of 22 or higher; or SAT with sub-scores of 520 on Math, 510 on Critical Reading, and 480 on Writing. Scores must be within last 10 years OR

Grade of B or better in a college level writing/composition course (WBIS 188 or ENG 312) and grade of C or better in a college level math course (MATH 104 or higher) OR

1 Updated 11/23/2018

If B or higher is not earned in college level writing/composition course, take and pass Praxis Core tests in Reading (#5712) with score of 156 AND Writing (#5722) with a score of 162. If C or higher is not earned in college level math course (cannot be remedial course), you must take and pass the Praxis Core Math (# 5732) test with a score of 150 OR

Passing scores on the PRAXIS Core (Reading ? 156; Writing ? 162; Math ? 150). Register at .

TRANSFER TIPS

If you hope to graduate within 4-5 years, it is best to transfer after completing 24-30 transferable credits. Transferring later for Elementary Education will result in additional time to degree.

Take a college level math and English composition course as soon as possible to receive an exemption from the PRAXIS Core. See #2 above.

Take CTA 103 and PSY 250 or 360 as soon as possible. PSY 201 or 202 is a pre-requisite for PSY 250 & 360. Volunteer in a classroom or job shadow a teacher as soon as possible. Elementary Education students need to

decide which grades levels they want to be teach, so it's important to get a variety of experiences to ensure you pick the program that's the best fit for you. Explore licensure options at UWO: Do not take the PRAXIS Core or purchase the Tk20 portfolio until you have consulted with an academic advisor at UWO. See alternative ways to meet Reading, Writing & Math competency below. Students with a transfer GPA of 3.25 or higher AND a certain ACT/SAT score are eligible for the Direct Admit program. Students in this program are not required to meet the requirements for Application to the Professional Education Program. Students must still meet with an academic advisor at UWO to verify they meet the direct admission requirements. Student need a 3.25 GPA as well as one of the following: minimum Composite Score of 22 on the ACT Plus Writing Test, minimum score of 23 on the ACT Test, minimum sub-score of 520 on mathematics, 510 on critical reading and 480 on writing for the SAT Test.

UNIVERSITY STUDIES PROGRAM & DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

Students who transfer with the Associate of Arts and Science degree will have met the University Studies Program (USP) or general education requirements, but NOT necessarily the degree requirements for the BSE. The requirements are combined in this guide to help illustrate the most efficient course selections.

AAS ? Indicates a course or requirement where the Associate of Arts and Science degree and the UWO Oshkosh requirements overlap.

WRITING - This requirement is fulfilled with completion of AAS.

B or higher required in one of the following for PRAXIS exemption.

Cumulative 2.0 GPA required in the two writing courses. If only ENG 102 is completed, students must earn a C or higher.

NOTES

University Studies Program (USP) The University Studies Program (USP) is the new definition of general education at UW Oshkosh, designed to help students reap the maximum benefits from their college education. Transfer students will participate in USP at varying degrees based upon the number of credits transferred into the university.

0-14 Credits ?

You're still considered a first-year student and will be able to participate in all USP Quest and Connect courses. Any courses you've taken previously will continue to transfer to UW Oshkosh, but the names of courses or course categories may differ slightly.

15-59 Credits ?

To help you get situated on campus you'll engage in a Transition Year Experience. You will enroll for USP 200, which is a 0 credit course and only meets once a week for the first two weeks of the semester. This will help you learn what UWO has to offer, show you what resources are available and introduce you to new people.

60+ Credits ?

Because you have more than 60 credits, you are not required to take the Quest sequence of courses or the Transition Year Experience. Admissions will determine which courses transfer and identify any courses you may need to complete.

6 Updated 11/23/2018

If you've already completed an approved associate degree, your USP requirements are automatically fulfilled.

Please note that in addition to USP requirements, you are responsible for specific requirements related to your major, minor (if any) and degree. Transfer counselors or academic advisers will assist you along the way in understanding these requirements.

Other Notes

In a few instances, courses are designated differently at the UW Colleges than they are at UWO in terms of general education (i.e. HU becomes SS in transfer). In these instances the student can often choose to accept the UWO designation, or have the UWC designation honored. Changes cannot be made until after UWO admission, and it is always best to discuss these changes with an academic advisor first.

The official UW Oshkosh GPA will be calculated using only UW Oshkosh credits earned. Credits transferred to UW Oshkosh are recognized, but the grades are not included in the official UW Oshkosh GPA. For various university-level honors designations students will have to earn at least 60 credits at UW Oshkosh and only those Oshkosh grades are considered. The official transcript will display the official UW Oshkosh GPA, UW Oshkosh course work and transfer course grades that will not be included in the official UW Oshkosh GPA.

o The College of Education uses the combined GPA for admission, which will include transfer and UWO course grades.
