Specifically, the following classes would be removed as elective options in Major:ACTY 3220 - Cost and Managerial Accounting?? Credits: 3 hoursCIS 2640 - Business Analytics I?? Credits: 3 hoursCIS 3640 - Business Analytics II?? Credits: 3 hoursCIS 4500 - Customer Relationship Management Credits: 3 hoursFIN 3350 - Small Business Finance?? Credits: 3 hoursMKTG 2750 - Global Negotiation?? Credits: 3 hoursMKTG 4500 - Customer Relationship Management?? Credits: 3 hoursMKTG 4760 - Retail Management?? Credits: 3 hoursFIN 3300 - Real Estate Fundamentals?? Credits: 3 hoursLAW 3820 - Business Law?? Credits: 3 hoursLAW 4840 - International Business Law?? Credits: 3 hoursLAW 4860 - Marketing and Sales Law?? Credits: 3 hoursLAW 4880 - Legal Aspects of Entrepreneurship?? Credits: 3 hoursMGMT 5050 – Strategy for Buying and Operating a Small Business? Credits: 3 hoursIn addition, we propose removing one elective from the Major. This would take the required number of electives from 3 down to 2. Rationale. Give your reason(s) for the proposed improvement. We want students to focus on electives that fit the LBS major. The following classes would still be acceptable electives, thus giving students a wide selection of choices while still taking courses that fit the major:MGMT 2140 - Exploring Entrepreneurship Credits: 3 hoursMGMT 2520 - Human Resource Management Credits: 3 hoursMGMT 2750 - Analytical Foundations Credits: 3 hoursMGMT 3140 - Small Business Management Credits: 3 hoursMGMT 3340 - Business Model Design Credits: 3 hoursMGMT 3500 - Managing Diversity in Organizations Credits: 3 hoursMGMT 4000 - Topics in Management Credits: 3 hoursMGMT 4040 - Business and Society Credits: 3 hoursMGMT 4070 - Change Management Credits: 3 hoursMGMT 4100 - Multinational Management Credits: 3 hoursMGMT 4140 - Building the Business Credits: 3 hoursMGMT 4320 - Compensation and Benefits Credits: 3 hoursMGMT 4340 - Family Business Management Credits: 3 hoursMGMT 4510 - Staffing Organizations Credits: 3 hoursMGMT 4540 - Employment Relations Credits: 3 hoursMGMT 4640 - Production Management and Control Credits: 3 hoursMGMT 4650 - Managing for Quality Credits: 3 hoursFurther, these courses are more likely to be taken by our students anyway, after looking at data from Advising. Regarding our proposal to reduce the number of required electives from 3 down to 2:We have proposed a curriculum change that would increase the number of credit hours for MGMT 3010 (required in the major) from 3 hours to 6 hours (see ‘B-2019-MGMT-8’). Therefore, in order to maintain the program’s current required number of credit hours, we are reducing one required elective. Effect on other colleges, departments, or programs. If consultation with others is required, attach evidence of consultation and support. If objections have been raised, document the resolution. Demonstrate that the program you propose is not a duplication of an existing one.We do not anticipate an effect on other colleges, departments, or programs. Students report rarely, if ever, taking courses from those we propose to eliminate.Effect on your department’s programs. Show how the proposed change fits with other departmental offerings. We have not removed any department electives, except for one (MGMT 5050). Faculty in Entrepreneurship were consulted and agree that removal of this elective is appropriate to reduce student confusion. Alignment with college’s and department’s strategic plan, mission, and vision.Continued improvement to the LBS program, including changes to these electives, helps LBS to more clearly position itself as a program deserving of national recognition. Effects on enrolled students: Are program conflicts avoided? Will your proposal make it easier or harder for students to meet graduation requirements? Can students complete the program in a reasonable time? Show that you have considered scheduling needs and demands on students’ time. There should not be any effect on students, as many electives remain on the approved list. Further, the removed electives are not ones are students normally take – as indicated by data from Advising. Finally, we are protecting students’ ability to complete the program in a reasonable time by reducing one required elective in response to the proposal making MGMT 3010 6 hours instead of 3 (see question #2 above, and ‘B-2019-MGMT-8’ for a discussion of this change).Student or external market demand. What is your anticipated student audience? What evidence of student or market demand or need exists? What is the estimated enrollment? What other factors make your proposal beneficial to students? This proposal is actually beneficial to students in that it encourages them to think strategically about which electives best contribute to the ‘story’ they are crafting as WMU graduates, as opposed to cobbling together electives without any decisive framework for doing so.Effects on resources. Explain how your proposal would affect department and University resources, including faculty, equipment, space, technology, and library holdings. If proposing a new program, include a letter and/or email of support from the university libraries affirming that the library resource issues have been reviewed. Tell how you will staff additions to the program. If more advising will be needed, how will you provide for it? What will be the initial one-time costs and the ongoing base-funding costs for the proposed program? (Attach additional pages, as necessary.)There should be no effect on resources. Instead, we may actually be creating capacity by removing electives and opening up seats in those courses for interested students. List the learning outcomes for the revised or proposed major, minor, or concentration. The department will use these outcomes for future assessments of the program.1. Leadershipa. As such, learning assessment data has not yet been reported. Plans are being made to begin data collection in Fall 2019.The major itself was created in response to broader assessment and strategic planning activities. A task force of 6 MGMT faculty conducted a deep strategic analysis of the MGMT major and minor in Fall 2017 and Winter 2018. This included collecting and analyzing the following data: surveys of skills required by recruiters, Town Hall meeting of current management majors, analysis of peer and aspirant schools, Haworth College of Business Post Graduation Activity Reports, surveys of alumni, departmental meeting, informal feedback from various stakeholders including faculty, Haworth College of Business Dean, Chair of Management Department, career center, advising, students, and companies at Career fair, consideration of Haworth College of Business and WMU current strategic objectives, consideration of previous reviews of the major by Provost Greene, and consideration of faculty expertise. (Undergraduate proposals only) Describe in detail how this change affects transfer articulation for Michigan community colleges. For new majors or minors, describe transfer guidelines to be developed with Michigan community colleges. For revisions to majors or minors, describe necessary revisions to Michigan community college guidelines. Department chairs should seek assistance from college advising directors or from the admissions office in completing this section. We do not anticipate an effect on transfer articulation. Please offer both “Current Catalog Language” and “Proposed Catalog Language” if there is to be a change in the catalog description for a given program. For the “current” language, please copy and paste relevant language from the most current catalog and for the “proposed” language, please share the exact proposed new catalog language.
