Collaborative Project Resources

According to Judi Harris, technology is a natural component to include when undertaking collaborative projects.  Each type of collaboration can take on a number of different profiles.  Students can be collecting data, corresponding with students in another school, in the same school, doing some collaborative problem solving across geographical and cultural boundaries, or working with a mentor to solve a problem or investigate a topic.  These resources are not grouped according to the type(s) of projects that are found at each location.  As a teacher, you will need to look at each one to determine if it fits the needs of your classroom, grade level curriculum, and desired outcomes.  There are some very important things to remember when you begin to look at these projects and consider participation or even development of one of your own.  When developing performance-based learning outcomes, it is important to keep the following distinction in mind:

• activities designed to help students master information and skills ARE DIFFERENT FROM

• activities designed to allow students to demonstrate the extent to which they have mastered the information and skills

If you need to dig a little bit deeper and find out more about technology integrated collaborative projects, here are the best places to begin.

Is it worth it?

Getting Started...this is when you ask yourself, "When is a telecollaborative project really "worth it"?"Will this use of the Internet enable students to do something that they could not do before? Will this use of the Internet enable students to do something now  that they could do before but can do better now?
