The museum’s inaugural Dirt to Dinner event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, August 4 and 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and highlight activities and organizations that support sustainable food choices. Dirt to Dinner will help families learn more about the different stages of food -- where it comes from and how it gets there. Hands-on activities will teach families how to make more sustainable decisions about their food -- economically, environmentally and socially. The event will highlight skills such as sustainable shopping, food preparation, gardening, food waste management and food preservation.“With Dirt to Dinner, we are working with a number of local and regional partners to show visitors easy ways to positively impact their health, pocketbook and the environment,” said OMSI Events Manager Andrea Middleton.“This is the first event of its kind in Portland that showcases the life cycle of your food and helps you understand how your eating habits affect the environment. We will provide a fun, engaging way for families to learn practical new skills they can take home and apply to their everyday lives.”Event partners truly represent every stage of food, from “dirt” -- whether it’s growing food sustainably or composting -- to “dinner,” including providing nutrition education and demonstrating how to prepare food using healthy recipes.Stations and demonstrations will include:Recipe demonstrations from Jeff Potter, author of Cooking for Geeks; Whole Foods Market; Bob’s Red Mill; Bon Appetit and moreTamales from Hacienda CDC, a Micro Mercantes program that allows aspiring micro-entrepreneurs to gain practical farmers market and catering experience, with an eye toward launching their own businessesNutrition information from Oregon Food Bank, Health Coach Resource, Educate Ya!, Painted Hills Natural Beef, National College of Natural Medicine and moreHow to raise chickens and develop a chemical-free lawn How to reduce food waste from Waste Management and compost at home from the City of PortlandHow to create a window garden, pack a zero-waste lunch and more from OMSI expertsThe health and sustainability aspects of this event directly address two of OMSI’s core initiatives: “health and wellness” and “energy and the environment.”“We are discovering more and more that healthy food choices are the best for both our bodies and the environment,” said Chris Stockner, energy and the environment spokesperson for OMSI. “OMSI’s Dirt to Dinner will provide a one-stop learning opportunity that is both educational and entertaining for the whole family.”Presented by a grant from the National Science Foundation, Dirt to Dinner is sponsored by the Portland Tribune and Community Newspapers.?About OMSIFounded in 1944, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is one of the nation’s leading science museums, a world-class tourist attraction, and an award-winning educational resource for the kid in each of us.
