Introduction

With new technology developed on a daily basis all around the globe, the South African National Council for the Blind (SANCB) strives to supply and support tested assistive technology. As the advocate for visually impaired persons, the SANCB needs to ensure that our end-users are as productive as possible with the tools we supply and/or recommend in order for them to be worthy ambassadors for our field of the disability sector. Many examples of visually impaired persons in mainstream and academia who already reflect this ideology are available upon request.

Disclaimer

The SANCB does not limit itself to one product or supplier but rather considers the best option for the end user. Should difficulties be encountered sourcing from local distributors for whatever reasons, we reserve the right to deal with international suppliers.

Assistive Daily Living Devices

As with all technology and devices supplied by the National Council for the Blind, we strive to supply and support tested assistive devices. As most of our items are imported and not manufactured in South Africa, prices are not displayed due to currency fluctuations but quotations can be requested. As the advocate for visually impaired persons, the SANCB needs to ensure that our end-users are as productive as possible with the devices we supply in order for them to be fully independent in their daily lives.

Liquid level indicator

This audio unit attaches to the edge of a cup or glass, and emits a high sounding beep when liquid reaches a certain level. When more liquid is added e.g. milk, a higher sounding beep indicates that the cup has reached its full capacity.

Easy needle threader

Easily threads needles by placing the cotton in the groove, the needle in the funnel and depressing the lever.

Boil control unit

The unit is placed in water and when the water reaches boiling level, it starts rattling against the side of the pot indicating that the liquid is boiling.

Glucose meter

This device has tactile buttons for easy identification of functions and it speaks your blood glucose level in six seconds. It is powered by 2 AAA batteries.

Talking clocks

Talking clocks supply time and alarm functions.

Colourino

This unit identifies colours by holding against fabric, and voice identifies the colour.

Signature guide

A credit card size signature guide.

Money template

This is an aluminium device for identifying paper money.

Coin selector

This plastic unit has apertures for South African coins. You can handily store your coins in one unit.

Braille watches (2 models)

These watches have raised hour markers for a tactile reading of the time, in silver or gold finishing.

Talking watches (3 models)

These watches come in ladies and gents models, one button with a clear announcement of time.

White folding canes

This cane is made of durable aluminium in white, folds away easily in bag.

Rigid cane

This cane is made of durable aluminium in white, does not fold away but stays rigid.

Pen Friend

This electronic unit allows identification of items by affixing a dot on to the item and the user speaks the specifications of the item. This is for later identification by holding the Pen Friend against the dot.

Braille tape-measure

Meter long tape-measure has tactile markings at centimetre and inch.

Pill splitter

Cuts tablets in half easily.

Pill organiser

Keeps pills in a daily organiser.

Talking kitchen scale

Audibly announces the measurements of ingredients being weighed.

Blindness Products

Computer with screen reading software

A computer equipped with screen-reading software allows a visually impaired person access to electronic information and allows the freedom of communication and access to the internet.

Victor reader stratus

This reader is essential for reading complex and highly structured books like textbooks, reference works in Daisy, MP3,

MP4 and various other formats. It accepts CDs, SD cards and USB memory sticks. It also has advanced functionality such as skipping instantly to a specific page and placing multiple bookmarks.

Victor reader stream

This handheld talking book player allows a visually impaired person to access DAISY books, MP3, MP4 and many other media formats. The build in microphone enables sound recordings.

Slate and stylus

A reasonably low cost and convenient means of writing braille.

Braille display

This braille display is designed for extensive reading when connected to a pc or smart phones. Works with USB or Bluetooth.

Eye pal reader

Smart Scanner/Reader that reads aloud any printed materials. Ergonomic, easily foldable, light weight device automatically detects the size of a document, instantly scans and converts it to speech.

Index braille box embosser

The Braille Box has set the new standard for high speed, volume braille on cut sheet paper in a variety of sizes. Braille Box is easy to operate for both sighted and visually impaired persons. This unit is quiet, fast and efficient and prints tabloid style with centrefold.

Low Vision Products

As the selection and successful implementation of low vision devices are based on the task to be performed, the user's level of functional vision, the stability of the user's vision, the user's ability to manipulate the equipment etc. It is not advisable to recommend one single device as a 'one size fits all' option. It is important that prospective users be assessed for the proposed low vision equipment.

Synergy desktop magnifier

This desktop magnifier is a functional device for a visually impaired person. It offers people with different eye conditions increased flexibility and additional functionality by magnifying vision and enlarging text, pictures and other objects. Everyday activities like viewing photos, reading labels and textbooks become easy. It has auto focus, magnification ranges up to 50 times and zoom display.

Dolphin pen

This device plugs straight in to a computer’s USB pot. It magnifies text on the screen for all files including the internet. It is fully portable and works on different computers.

Smartview 360

A powerful, portable desk top magnifier that allows you to

see in any direction and view on with LCD screen, the auto focus camera is easily positioned. Enlarge text from a textbook, or focus on the white board. It has adjustable colour schemes e.g. black and white, yellow and black etc. Optional trolley bag available.

Computer with screen magnification software

A computer equipped with screen magnification and screen reading software allows a person with moderate to severe low vision, access to electronic information.

The ability to touch-type is essential in today's technology world. The magnification/screen reading software can be disabled with one touch, making the computer accessible to people who do not require these features.

Distance viewing devices

This is a hand-held monocular telescopes/binoculars used for magnifying objects in the distance, e.g. the chalk board. It is issued upon conclusion of comprehensive low vision assessment of individual visually impaired person.

ZoomText Large print keyboard

This keyboard was designed for anyone who struggles to see the lettering on their keyboard, it makes typing faster and easy. The 36-point text and high-contrast black on yellow colour scheme makes locating keys easy. It also provides quick access to certain features.

Near magnifying devices

Spectacle, hand-held, stand, illuminated (battery/ mains), optical lenses, issued upon conclusion of comprehensive low vision assessment of individual visually impaired person.

Software for the visually impaired

ZoomText

This magnification software allows you to see and hear what you’re doing in all of your application on the computer.

ZoomText will read and magnify your documents, web pages and email.

Abbyy fine reader

This is an OCR scanning application compatible with screen reading software for visually impaired pc users.

Jaws

This is a screen reading software that reads information on a computer screen to build users. It reads documents as well as web pages.

Duxbury

This braille translation software allows your computer to convert electronic text to braille, which can then be printed on an embosser.

Games for Blind and Sighted People

Scrabble

This is a game that has an easy-access rotating game board and low vision game tiles with bold black extra-large half-inch high letters on a white background.

Chess

The classic adverserial game for visually impaired players, chess pieces fit in to holes on the playing surface to avoid being knocked over.

Sudoku touch

This is a puzzle and number game with both braille and large print suitable for blind and sighted people.

Uno and braille cards

This is a family card game that comes in braille for greater accessibility to all players.

Super boggle

Super Big Boggle features a super-sized 6 x 6 grid and includes the NEW double letter cube and blank cube for more interesting game play.

Tactile Graphic Production

PIAF Tactile Image Maker

In early education Piaf can be used to introduce simple shapes and basic concepts and introduce the concept of drawing and two-dimensional solid objects; Blind students can express themselves graphically. Piaf can be used to access graphical information in areas such as Mathematics and Sciences.

Zyfuse Heater

The Zyfuse Heater is an innovative piece of technology which is used in conjunction with Zytex2 paper to produce tactile diagrams. The printed diagram is passed through the Zyfuse which causes the black ink to swell and form the end product of a diagram which can be examined using the hands.

Braille Production

The world is moving towards increasing the availability of information and we have also moved towards increasing access to braille material. The SANCB has started a braille production facility in Pretoria. We have up to date technology and software to make braille reading for visually impaired users easier and comfortable. Braille experts with great experience in braille production have joined the Council in printing pamphlets, books, business cards and UBT for the general elections.
