Beyond Candy Bar and Magazine Sales: A Local Food School FundraiserWhy a Local Food School Fundraiser?Raise money for your schoolProfits have ranged from $1000-$2000 and typically increase over subsequent years.Support the local economyMoney spent on these healthy products remains in the community rather than spent on low-quality items manufactured across the country or world.Provide educational connectionsStudents and families learn about area farms, agriculture-based products available in our region, and the implications and economics around shopping locally. This education can take place at Back-to-School night, through classroom presentations and/or a school assembly. Connections may continue to be made throughout the school year based on teacher interest. In addition, you might consider offering participation incentives such as a chef demonstration, a visit to an area farm or restaurant, or the chance to choose how money raised will be spent to strengthen the school environment.Improve community healthThis fundraiser provides increased access to healthy fruits and vegetables. A common phrase heard at participating schools is “Those carrots from the Fundraiser are the BEST!” Families and students begin to form connections with area farmers and seek out their products beyond the fundraiser. Support Farm to School effortsThis fundraiser aligns with objectives associated with Farm to School and may even be used to fund other Farm to School program activities. How does it work?A core group of volunteers forms relationships with area farmers and explores the potential of various products being included in the fundraiser (this core group may be drawn from an existing organization or a dedicated group of community members). Products may include items such as apples, potatoes, carrots, squash, beets, beef sticks, cheese, maple syrup, popcorn, honey, dried cranberries, or even Christmas wreaths. Products offered will depend upon regional availability. This core group works with area schools to offer the fundraiser. Each school designates a coordinator and/or committee to lead promotion, guide education connections, tally orders, and finally, orchestrate distribution. Coordinators are often designated by school PTO’s and the local food fundraisers are offered instead of or in addition to existing school fundraisers. A school coordinator can plan to dedicate at least 40 hours to this project with the help of additional volunteer support, particularly for the sorting and distribution of orders. ................
