Helpsheet- adding video to Glow-GC644

Adding video to Glow

Adding video to Glow can be done in several ways. You may find however that a video which plays perfectly in Glow on your computer may not play correctly on another user’s computer. This is because the video may be in a format or file type that requires certain player software to be installed on a computer before the video can play.

One way around this is to embed a player with the video. If you also chose a flexible file format for the video you can be more confident that the video will work correctly for others. The best video format for this purpose is MP4. It will probably be necessary to convert your video from the format produced by your video camera to MP4.

Converting the video

You can convert the video using a web site like Zamzar (). This can take some time because video files are usually very large.

Another option is to download and install free video converter software like Handbrake (PC/Mac) () or Format Factory (PC) onto your computer. The example below shows the Handbrake interface.

1. Click on Source and identify the file that you want to convert.

2. In Destination choose the location where your converted file will be saved.

3. Click Start.

Storing the Video

The simplest option which we will use here is to upload the video to a document store in a Glow group. This method can accommodate video files up to 50MB in size.

Uploading the video to the Glow web hosting area allows larger uploads but is a more complicated process and is covered separately in the Web Hosting Training Guide-GC278_v1.1. Alternatively, you could upload the video to a Glow wiki which you have created for this purpose.

Uploading the Video to Glow

1. Upload your converted video to a Document web part.

2. In the document store, right-click on the video file and choose ‘Copy Shortcut/Copy Link Location’ to copy the location of the file to the clipboard.

Adding the XML web part to play the video

1. Add an XML web part to your page.

2. Click on open the tool pane.

3. Click on XML Editor.

4. Copy and paste the code shown on page 3 into the XML Editor.

5. Replace the red text with the URL you copied in the last section. (In Firefox or Safari it is easier to edit the code before pasting it in.)

6. Click OK.
