From the Pastor October 9, 2005 - Parishes Online

From the PastorJune 28, 20151524069850013th Sunday in Ordinary Time - B This is week 3 of my summer sacred study series on the four [rarely used] Eucharistic Prayers for Various Needs [EPFVN] - which is really only one EP with four variations or themes. Today we reflect on the Preface or Introduction for EPFVN-I: “The Church on the Path to Unity.” [Each of the four Prefaces are unique; last week we did #4.] Even its ‘positive’ title suggests that - while we are not yet one with each other or with our Triune God - as Jesus prayed we would be at the Last Supper - [C.f. John 17:21-22] we have grown much closer than ever! Here’s the Preface extoling that unity:Preface for EPFVN-I: The Church on the Path of UnityIt is truly right and just to give you thanksand raise to you a hymn of glory and praise,O Lord, Father of infinite goodness. For by the word of your Son’s Gospelyou have brought together one Church from every people, tongue, and nation, and, having filled her with life by the power of your Spirit, you never cease through herto gather the whole human race into one.Manifesting the covenant of your love, she dispenses without ceasingthe blessed hope of your Kingdom and shines bright as the sign of your faithfulness, which in Christ Jesus our Lordyou promised would last for eternity. And so, with all the Powers of heaven, we worship you constantly on earth, while, with all the Church, as one voice we acclaim:Preface I: Our Hope for Church & Human Unity. Do you remember the ‘pop song’ used as a Coke commercial [or was it the other way around?]: “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing in Perfect Harmony?” [If not, Google it for a ‘blast from the past!’] That ‘folk’ song could also be one of the Church’s ‘theme songs’ - for her mission and goal is also unity. Thankfully, after many centuries of violent disagreements, most Christians [for the most part] now settle their differences peacefully. While we cannot ignore the fact that we have a long way to go … we can rejoice, as this Preface states, that we are on the right path! But only with the proper celebration of our Rites - and the Holy Spirit’s grace - can we stay on the path and reach our goal of unity. Do we realize how shocking it was to propose - 2,000 years ago - that those “from every people, tongue, and nation” could form one Church in which they could retain their language, ethical customs and moral culture? The Bible and secular history attest to the fact that the ‘usual’ way to unity in those days was to eradicate the enemy, destroy everything foreign or contrary to the conqueror’s ‘ways’ and put all those who did not assimilate to the sword. Sadly, this kind of intolerant, ‘forced’ conversion - or the execution of those who are ‘different’ - is still the norm for radical Islam and, to some extent, for some fringe religious sects and the deranged. One Family, One Faith, One Truth. The Church gives great witness when she gathers for holy Mass. For she shows how - while we are diverse - we can still be united. For each one, in his or her own way, strives to hear, proclaim and live by the one Gospel Truth. And then, as one Body, each one shares in communion with the Body and Blood of Christ - which is the sign of our unity - and the grace-filled Sacrament that binds us together and keeps us one. This unity is profoundly seen in Saint Peter Square, when flags from every nation flutter under the Holy Father: the outward sign that there is “one Lord, one faith, one baptism [and] one God and Father of all.” [Ephesians 4:5-6a] We will see it locally, on the streets of Philadelphia, when Pope Francis celebrates Mass there at 4 PM on September 27; more about His Holiness’ pilgrimage to the USA in future articles. The Role of the Church in Fostering Unity. There are three ways the Church helps create and sustain unity among all people. The first is by “manifesting the covenant of [God’s] love” - for by infusing every earthly endeavor with heavenly guidance: with Gospel values and divine Commandments, she helps everyone care for and respect each other. And she “dispenses without ceasing … hope” - by forgiving, in God’s name, past failures and by calling us to reach beyond the present reality. And, as mentioned above, she “shines bright as the sign of [God’s] faithfulness” for as she well knows: “Nothing is impossible for God.” [Luke 1:37] even unity! In His holy Name,Rev. Thomas J.
