Welcome to 9th Grade ENRICHED ALGEBRA!!

Being Successful in Enriched Algebra

We will be monitoring progress via NWEA and classroom grades to make sure that this class is the best placement for you / your child. Tips to doing well in this class are: stay on top of homework assignments, take notes, form study groups, create flashcards….anything you need to do to make yourself successful (we will go over more detailed ways to study/review in class).

2019 Areas of focus

• Daily homework: As a result of taking a high school math class, we practically have homework every day. Homework will be 5% of the cumulative grade so homework does not have much weight, but homework completion is vital to review the concepts so that the next day we can build on that skill during the next class period. Homework is also an extremely valuable aide for homework quizzes and as study materials for formative and summative assessments. Students who are not successful in this class are often students who neglect homework responsibilities.

• Technology: I have been trained on implementing TI-Nspire CX graphing calculators into my learning environments. These calculators may be new to students, but it will not take long for them to be extremely comfortable with navigating the calculator and through all of its features and functions. All students will have access to a calculator daily for classroom use; however, students will not have the ability to take a calculator home.

o As a result, parents have asked me if this calculator is necessary to purchase for home use. Although it is not required, if the budget allows, I encourage that each student purchase this graphing calculator for use in this class, as well as all future high school Mathematics courses. Again, this is merely a recommendation. A calculator is not needed at home for this class (or future) classes, but it does help with depth of the content, filling in knowledge gaps and quickly checking answers. (see reverse side for an Amazon picture of the calculator) Note: this calculator CAN be used on ACT and SAT’s.

▪ There are many graphing calculator apps that have the same functions that we use in class for students to use on their phones or iPads. These apps can be used to try out first instead of purchasing the calculator right away. My recommendation has been the FREE GRAPHING CALCULATOR app in the APP STORE. If you are on the fence of purchasing a graphing calculator, try this out first!!!!
