FOUNDATION

$ 95 contributed to the Rotary Foundation. Many thanks! Lucky holder of the draw for

$ 11.00 was Mark Taylor.

Barry’s report - we achieved our Foundation goals with member contributions and with the ‘Every Rotarian, Every Year’ program.

ROTARY MINUTE

Steve took the opportunity to share ‘how we Rotarians are making the world a better place’. This past Rotary year, the Rotary Foundation approved 1,078 global grant applications, with total funding of $ 76.5 million. Community assessment is a new component for all global grants or vocational training team applications as part of Rotary’s commitment to sustainability. This new approach facilitated the creation of the Rotary Disaster Response Fund and Grant, which allows for the distribution of grants up to $ 25,000 for worldwide Rotarian disaster response.

SERGEANT AT ARMS – Ralph Lemmon

Despite the lovely weather, beautiful day, our numbers were low. Two happy bucks from Steve. He is short-listed for a National position with Big Brothers, Big Sisters. Also, last Friday, the Beer & Burger event was a huge success. Randy and Anne are delighted with our great medical system. Happy buck from Sheila, just in time, she now has central air conditioning. Recently, Michael R. attended the VIU Chancellor’s dinner and a retirement celebration for Dr. Nielsen at Milner Gardens. Good news, we made $ 2,100 at Foam Fest. Even better, Harry tells us we are invited back for 2020. Barry attended the annual SD 68 awards event at the Port Theater. $ 200,000 was awarded to 200 bright kids. Inspiring and uplifting. Greg enjoyed his cooking duties at Foam Fest. Dale, perhaps not so happy with his ice chilled hands. Not funny – late afternoon, in the process of leaving work, Brian M. asked the BC Hydro worker what he was doing with the power pole outside the Museum. The reply - I am digging a hole in advance of tomorrow’s power stoppage. The power system is being upgraded. It was a big scramble to prepare for the unexpected ‘closed’ day. Rachel had the winning ticket. Alas, no joker. Next week the pot is $ 270.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL – JUNE 2019

[pic]

VERY INTERNATIONAL

Jodie & James were among the 25,000 attendees at the June Convention. Jodie shared pictures and personal highlights. There were people from everywhere and every venue was busy, busy. They took in everything and greatly enjoyed meeting and talking with new people. 90 District 5020 Rotarians did the Harbour cruise. German’s love their jazz, bread, pizza and ice cream. Many great speakers and presentations. Chris Wells, talk on ‘dogoodery ‘ was inspiring.

HOUSE OF FRIENDSHIP

This is where the Rotary world comes together to share ideas, best practices and project successes. Totally Awesome!

The final month of every Rotary year is Fellowship Month. This is a fitting designation since fellowship is particularly to the forefront with changeovers being very much the priority in June. Fellowship is one of the five core values of Rotary, the others being service, diversity, integrity and leadership. Fellowship is a fun way to make friends around the world, explore a hobby or profession, and enhance your Rotary experience. Fellowships are open to Rotarians, family members, program participants and alumni. There is an incredible diversity within the 75+ officially recognized Rotary fellowships. Groups are formed around one’s interest in meeting and sharing with others their hobby, sport, profession, musical taste, travel, etc. More information can be found at the Rotary International website.

THOUGHTS TO REJUMP YOUR DAY

• A wise man often says nothing.

• Why do I have to press “1” for English? Did we move?

• In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

• Camping: where you spend a small fortune to live like a homeless person.

• Behind every woman stands a man who has absolutely no idea what he did wrong.

• I thought getting older would take longer.

• Some things are better left unsaid and I usually realize it right after I say them.

WISDOM OF CHILDREN

Kids…

“How many women can a man marry?’

“Sixteen,” the boy responded.

His cousin was amazed that he had an answer so quickly.

“How do you know that?’

“Easy,” the little boy said.

“All you have to do is add it up, like the pastor said - 4 better, 4 worse, 4 richer, 4 poorer.”

A little girl became restless as the preacher’s sermon dragged on and on. Finally, she leaned over to her mother and whispered, “Mummy, if we give him the money now, will he let us go?”

The Sunday School Teacher asks, “ Now, Johnny, tell me frankly do you say prayers before eating?” “ No ma’am, “ little Johnny replies, I don’t have to. My mom is a good cook.”
