School calendars are developed by local school system leaders in accordance with state law. There are laws that define required state holidays and the number of days and hours that schools must be open for pupil attendance. The Maryland State Department of Education does not dictate school start dates, teacher professional learning days, or the length of winter and spring breaks. These decisions are made at the local school system level with the input of stakeholders to best meet the needs of the school community.
