BMSH SCHOOL SUGGESTED SUMMER ... - …

Baldwin Middle-Senior High SchoolSummer Reading—Connecting CharactersFor all Middle School StudentsDirections:Choose a summer reading selection of your choice. You may choose a title from the list provided or you may choose any age-appropriate book you’d like to read. Please do not select a title that you read for English/Language Arts class in grade 5. When you finish reading the book, choose a main character from the story and record the following information on a 4 x 6 index card. (This card is due to your language arts teacher by September 6). Index Card Requirements: (see example below) Place a small wallet-size picture of the character from your story on the top left corner of your index card. This can be hand drawn or printed. Place the title of your book and name of your character at the top of the index card. Write 1-2 sentences describing the character’s importance in the story. Write 1-2 sentences telling which of the “Six Pillars of Character Education” you connect to your character: caring, responsibility, citizenship, respect, trustworthiness, or fairness. Provide text evidence that shows the connection between your character and the appropriate character pillar. You must use a direct quote from the story. In your last sentence, tell about the connection you have with this character. On the bottom of the card write your name and grade. Example: 72847196040The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton---Character Connection: Johnny Cade One of the main characters in the novel, The Outsiders, is Johnny Cade. He is best friends with Ponyboy and has an abusive father. Although Johnny is a member of the Greaser gang; he is a reliable and caring friend. In chapter one, Ponyboy describes each of the Greasers and states, “If it hadn’t been for the gang, Johnny would never have known what love and affection are” (page 92). This quote demonstrates how important it is to have close friends that care for you. I connected with Johnny’s character because I have caring friends in my life as well.
