They are so fun to look at I had to take photos and sketch this one. When the newly repackaged So Soft arrived at my door, I knew I had to paint this flower with it. First, I chose a natural color tote with brown trim, and then I painted the back of a black jean jacket for my friend, Kate. I have included instructions and photos for the changes needed to paint on black.PreparationSlide canvas board into tote; secure loose edges behind board using pins or masking tape. You want all edges to be secure, so they do not drag in the paint. Trace the designs onto tracing paper. Now, flip them over and trace the lines again, on the wrong side, with the charcoal pencil. Decide where you are going to place your sunflower pattern on the canvas tote. Very carefully lower the pattern onto the surface, do not drag or scoot it around, the charcoal will smear. Hold firmly with one hand and using a bottle of paint, pull it across the tracing, do not push it. You may peek to see if it is there. Check out my YouTube video for applying the pattern the paint heavily with a soft white nylon brush; you must cover the weave of the fabric thoroughly. You will be blending wet paint into wet paint therefore you will need to paint the suggested area to completion before moving on. Don’t stress though, the paint does not dry too quickly. This paint is very creamy and glides on smoothly, you can pick up a large amount on the end of your brush, lay it on the area and stretch it out. I like to lay my palette as close as possible to my design so I don’t drip on my surfaceSunflower Center; in the photo of the real sunflower I can see the dimension of the seeds. I wanted to create that look the best I could so I used DecoArt Americana Premium Texture Medium. Squirt out a small amount on your palette and dip your small round brush into it. You want it heavy and globby on the brush so you can dab it onto the center of the sunflower.Petals: depending on how fast you paint you can work on a few petals at a time because So Soft has some open time. Start by applying Antique Gold to the areas that are in the shaded portion of each petal. See the photo for a close up of a sample area. Fill in the remaining areas with Cadmium Yellow Hue as shown in the sample photo. Blend the colors together where they meet. Next apply Brown as the shading in the areas shown in the photo and soften this into the Antique Gold of the previous layer. CritiqueAfter you have applied all the layers to the section you are working on take the time to stop and study it. Sometimes the paint is absorbed into the fabric especially in the case of coarse weave fabrics like this tote bag. Add another layer of any colors that are not evident. Turn your brush on the chisel edge and apply more Brown with streaks as you can see in the photo below.Lastly apply Buttermilk as a highlight along the areas that will catch the light, again using the next photo as a reference for the application of the paint. Center; paint the very center with Avocado Green and then paint Cadmium Orange Hue on the rest of the area. Shade the top edge of each section with Brown and soften it into the base color. Tap Cadmium Orange Hue spots in the center of the Avocado Green and smoosh them down into the surface to soften. Tap Black on the texture spots of the Cadmium Orange Hue area and smoosh them as well so that aren’t too bold. See the photo for the finished sunflower center. LeavesPaint Green Apple on the light areas followed by Olive Green on all remaining areas and blend where they meet. See photos for reference Streak the leaves with Green Apple and then a little Black to add interest.Adding MetallicI like a little sparkle, so I dry brushed Metallic Gold on the light value areas of the sunflower petals and the leaves.Painting the design on BlackMost of the instructions will be the same for painting on black as painting on a lighter value. I will only list the changes that you will be making to paint it on black otherwise follow the same instructions as above. You will use the white General’s chalk pencil to apply the design to black instead of the 6B.You WILL NOT use Buttermilk or Avocado Green; they will look white or get lost on the black. You will need to apply the colors heavily as listed above painting 4 – 5 petals at a time and allowing the paint to absorb a little before applying another layer. You will probably apply 2-4 layers until it is covered. Paint the petals with Cadmium Yellow Hue and Antique Gold until they are covered. The reference photos will help you to see how much paint is needed to cover and how you can work around the sunflower adding the layers as you allow some areas to absorb a little. The paint does take longer to dry than Americana Acrylic, however you MUST paint wet into wet so don’t wait too long to apply another layer. Only allow enough drying time for the next layer not to get lost in the underneath layerOnce the petals have a good coverage of yellow and gold, then shade with streaks of Brown and a touch of Black as needed. You can see this on the above photo that shows the petals in all the various stages of development and on the photo below that has all the petals finished. Paint the center Cadmium Orange Hue and Brown as shown in the photo. The leaves will be painted Green Apple and Avocado Green with a little of the black background showing through as a shading. See photos. If needed shade with Black paint.Lastly I dry brushed the petals, center texture and leaves with So Soft Metallic GoldDebra L Welty, TDA has been a teacher in the field of decorative painting for over 30 years.
