Record of initial planning

To be completed by the candidate

This page records initial meeting(s) with your supervisor to agree your project proposal.

Your first idea for topic/title

After some thought about the A- Level subjects I enjoy most and the career path I eventually want to follow I decided that I wanted to base my EPQ around

the field of economics. However, as this is such a wide and varied field I did some further research into the subject and came up with two sub-

categories of economics that particularly interested me. Both Behavioural Economics and Economic History intrigued me as I am interested in how the

theory of economics interacts with the real individuals and businesses that make up the economy, so I decided to draft a question for each and decide

between the two later in the process these two questions are "Was Culture a Major Factor in South Asia's Exponential Growth?" and "Why did the Industrial

Revolution take place in Britain?"

Your first ideas for research and development of your project

Research is a major part of the EPQ process and as such it is very important to have a good research process when completing the EPQ. This lead me to

formulate a plan so as to execute the research portion of the project well. First I will have to find some general sources relating to the two sub-

categories I outlined above using information from these sources I will try and find more specific sources of information that cater to the exact

subjects I will be writing about for my essay. I have already done some vague research into the sub- categories of economics that interest me and have

found two books which should give me some guidance when undertaking the initial stages of research. These are "Animal Spirits: How Human Psychology

Drives The Economy, and Why It Matters for the Global Economy". This books outlines the basic principals of Behavioural Economics and its importance in

respects of overall economic trends and so may be useful in introducing me to the overarching theories of the fields and may introduce me to further

reading that may supplement my EPQ. The second book is "Global Economic History: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)" by Robert C.

Allen. This book is also very useful as it goes into considerable depth on the various facets of economic history while giving an overall summary of the

Economic history of the world. Moreover this has a large section on the "great divergence argument" and the industrial revolution both particularly

relevant to the question I came up with. It is most likely that I will use both sources as they may prove relevant in both questions mentioned above.

After I have read both of these and found further sources I plan on making "note maps" (brief summaries of each chapter of the books) and more in-depth

notes on each source. I will then break my title down into research questions and use my sources to answer these questions. By doing this I would have

gathered all of the information needed to start writing my final essay.

Your supervisor’s main comments and advice

My supervisor informed me that both my title ideas were evaluative and challenging enough to be the subject matter of my EPQ, however he also told me

that to carry out the EPQ successfully I would have to have more than the two sources I already had. I plan to find these further sources in the near

future and have already pinpointed a few sources which I believe may be useful to me during the course of my project. He also suggested that I choose the

exact title of my project very soon so I could start planning properly and gathering resources in relation to this specific question. This should be

quite easy as I am already leaning towards one of the two questions I formulated earlier in the process. These were the only issues with the project he

had so far. I believe this is due to the fact that I had a good and pre-planned idea of what I was going to do before I started the project, taking time

over Christmas to think about problems with my previous dummy EPQ and how I could avoid these in the real thing. I plan to continue with this approach

throughout the entirety of the course to ensure further success. However I believe that I could have further success by documenting this process and

shaping a plan out of this using key dates and setting goals to make sure I can keep the process under control while making sure I get the best possible

result out of the project.

Changes, clarifications or additions you have made as a result of your discussion with your supervisor

After my discussion with my supervisor I decided to go with the title “Was Culture a Major Factor in South Asia’s Exponential Growth?” I chose this title

as I no longer plan on pursuing an Economic History career further after having conversations with various teachers at school. Moreover as this is a much

more contemporary topic I believe it will be much more relatable and therefore interesting for me to research and ultimately write a report about.

However, now I have found my title it is going to be much easier to find resources on this particular topic which I plan to do by visiting both the

London School of Economics and University College London Libraries on the 29th of January. Once I have obtained all of these resources it is just a

question of reading themand condensing them into notes which I will use when writing my EPQ. Once these resources are obtained I plan on making a

detailed structural plan of my essay, I am planning on completing this by the 7th of February before my next scheduled EPQ session. This structural plan

will help me both in terms of prioritising which areas I must research to fulfil all of my research questions and will help in terms of properly

answering the question I set myself when writing the EPQ itself. The dual functionality of the plan makes it my top priority to carry out this week.

Furthermore I am thinking about narrowing down the topic of the question outlined above even further due to the fact that South Asia is such a vast area

differing both demographically, linguistically and ethnically so to place them under on generalised banner of “South Asia” may be a huge assumption on my

part. This may mean that I will not be able to cover each area in the correct depth resulting in a poor end product. This means that I will have to carry

out further research as of this moment my top candidates to potentially become the subject of the EPQ are India, China, Japan and Pakistan, however this

list may decrease or increase in size depending on the results of my research and may not include any of the countries listed above. I plan to have this

research done by the 28th so I can then complete my project proposal and continue with the rest of my project at a steady pace.

Project proposal part A

To be completed by the candidate

Title of the Extended Project.

Present the topic to be researched in the form of a short statement/question/hypothesis with clear focus.

"Was Culture A Major Factor in South Asia's Exponential Growth?"

Provide a brief outline, based upon page 5 of this document, of

the topic researched or activity/task to be carried out and sources to be consulted

I plan on researching three countries in depth: China, India and Japan. I have secured several sources for each country. I have secured one major

source for the Indian case Study: "Beyond the Great Divergence: Rethinking Indian Economic History" by Tirthankar Roy, this is also supplemented by the

source " The Response to Economic Challenge A Comparative Economic History of India and China" by Subramanian Swamy. The main source I will be using

for the portion of my essay on China is "Role of Culture in Economic Development: Case Study of China and Latin America" by Amira Fellner. Finally the

main source I will be using for my Japan case study will be "The Japanese Consumer: an Alternative Economic History of Modern Japan" by Penelope

Francks. I will also be getting general theory from the books "Culture & Economics" by Nils Goldschmidt and "Animal Spirits" by George A. Akerlof and

Robert J. Shiller. In my conclusion I will try to take concepts from each of these sources and round them off using my own opinion as well.

the courses of study or area(s) of personal interest to which the topic relates

I am planning to study an economics related subject at university and this is a subject of interest for me . However, I am particluarly interested in

how individuals and the small decisions they make impact the economy as a whole. In this project I am going to attempt to answer the question whether

culture has a major or any impact at all on these small decisions that individuals make, which, in turn affect the wider economy.

your proposed action

My first step towards advancing forwards in the project would be to firstly, finish off reading all of my sources and take in-depth notes on the more

relevant sections of the sources. Then, using the plan I have already made I am going to organise the points from my notes into a rough structure. This

will be a great help to me when carrying out the report portion of the EPQ. I hope to read all of my sources by the 15th of February and over the half

term I plan on organising my points.

Project proposal part B

To be completed by the supervisor

Please comment below on the validity and feasibility of the proposal (project proposal Part A) as an Extended Project (specification 2.4)

| |Supervisor’s comments |

|Comment on the clarity and focus of the title chosen |The title is evaluative, but some care still needs to be taken to ensure that the project |

| |develops the required depth of understanding. Three major economies have been selected and the |

| |word 'culture' can be intrepreted in many ways so it would be easy to produce many findings that|

| |cannot be fully supported in the report. |

|Indicate the relation to, and development/extension |The project is clearly in Roshanth's area of interest and his current future study plans in |

|outside of, the main course(s) of study or interest |Economics. He has selected a topic with no duplication from his current subject choices. |

|Comment on the suitability of the proposed initial |His resources seem to be of good quality and have been supported by his attempts to access |

|sources and research base |sources form university libraries. He needs to be careful to use them to focus on his question |

| |as many may provide information that is not as useful and may even show bias towards certain |

| |cultural initiatives. |

|Confirm that the project is feasible in the proposed |The project is feasible in the given timescale as long as Roshanth develops clear research |

Planning review

To be completed by the candidate

This page records your outline plan at the start of your work.

Outline the next steps in your planned research/initial development

In the previous stage of the production log both my supervisors said that I must narrow down my title to produce a final product that is both the correct

length and the correct depth. Encompassed in my previous idea were three major economies: India, China and Japan. I wanted to select one of these

economies as I already had several resources giving me information on these countries and I believed that I did not have enough time to search for ten

new degree level sources. With this in mind I evaluated the sources I already had and came to the conclusion that India was the best option for me going

forward with the EPQ this is because I had more sources for this country and these sources were more relevant and had less of a bias than sources for

other countries. Moreover, after a quick search of the internet I realised that there is a large pool of literature on the Indian Economy and although

the same could be said to some extent for China and Japan, these electronic sources on India were much more relevant to me and my project. Furthermore

India was more of a personal interest for me as I already know a little about the history of the country, also, the country’s economy has had several

booms and busts giving much more potential for a balanced argument compared to China’s Economy which has gone through an unprecedented boom for over 10

years.

After altering my title I shifted my focus to the future steps I had to take to ensure I could the best I possibly could in the EPQ project. I divided my

time into several slots throughout the week and approximated the amount of time needed to complete the various sections (See Appendix 1).First I split my

title into four research questions or sub- categories: Religion, Family Values, Business Culture and Government Culture. This is so that I can make sure

that I focus my research and ensure that I complete the project to an appropriate level while maintaining a balanced argument. These research questions

also means that I can easily make a structural plan, making a sub- section for each research question. I have assigned 10 hours of my allotted time to

reading my sources I am planning to finish this before making the majority of my notes, this is so that I ensure that I have enough sources to make

in-depth notes and that my sources cover all facets of my various research questions. I have assigned 13 hours to taking notes, this is because I believe

this is the biggest component of my work since I have already made summaries of most of my sources. I plan to finish these in-depth notes by the week

beginning 21st of April, just before submitting my mid- project review. This is to make sure I have enough time to construct a detailed plan for my 5000

word essay and to make sure I have enough time and enough developed points to write the essay itself and come to a good evidence based conclusion. Using

these notes I will outline all my major arguments both for the proposal and against it and rank these arguments in terms of strength, helping me make

sure I have a balanced argument and aiding me make my structural plan by helping me match stronger arguments with strong arguments and weak arguments

with weaker arguments. The plan itself should take four hours in total (see appendix 1) also being finished in the week beginning 14th of April.

These three stages should enable me to start writing my plan very soon after handing in my mid- project review (25th April) and should put me in the

strongest position to be able to achieve the best grade possible for the EPQ project. However to make up for unexpected set- backs in the process I have

left most of the week beginning 24th April and the whole week 31st April as surplus to finish of the various note taking and planning tasks that must be

completed before I begin my final product.
