-16764050165Update – Tennis in the Valley – We began with an idea last winter that we could introduce tennis to children living in rural Kane County Utah. After all there were two courts at Valley High School, it didn’t matter that there was only one net that was being held up by pieces of wood, and the cracks in the courts were deep and that the hot patch had melted and ridges were prominent, and that no one had a tennis racquet. We had Austin Spencer and he had quite an Eagle Scout project – PLAYABLE COURTS!!! With the amazing help of family and friends a tree was cut down, the ridges were melted back into the cracks, lines were painted, post holes were cleaned out, two nets were installed, lights were fixed, and the courts were cleaned. Hundreds of hours of work later, 48 kids and moms were ready to hit tennis balls. Thanks to a USTA Utah equipment grant we provided everyone with the correct sized racquet, 2 18” kids nets, and 4 ball hoppers filled with red, orange, and green balls. At our end of lesson party each family will get a can of balls and each player will be sporting a Valley Tennis t-shirt. Please join the recycled “retirees” in their effort to provide the best courts possible in Kane County. Therefore, a generation and their children have had little or no exposure to tennis. In 2008, a grassroots effort in Kanab was launched to reintroduce tennis to the Kane County community. In the summer of 2009, using equipment and clothing generously donated in Satellite Beach, Florida and a volunteer instructor, 13 eager kids hit the courts in Kanab. Guess what – it worked!!! Since 2009 we have introduced over 100 kids to a new sport, provided 302 volunteer on court instructional hours, and received 4 small grants to equip all players with correctly sized racquets, balls, hats, and water bottles. 2013 promises to be our biggest year yet. We are expanding the program two-fold by offering tennis to the kids of the Valley (a very small rural area about 20 miles north of Kanab). The vermillion cliffs of Kane County are some of the most beautiful on earth, its’ four tennis courts however, are not. That’s where you come in, please turn the page over and meet the “Recycled Kane Tennis Retirees”. You get a make-over and you move to the sweetest retirement village on earth in Kanab Utah. That was the lifestyle choice made by Sonny, Blanche, the Bride, Buzzy, Tex, Eddie and all of their friends just a few short months ago. Thanks to the amazing talent of our local artists and craftspeople, they are once again having a “ball” and invite you to join them in their latest endeavor. For a monetary donation from you they are willing to travel to your home and be your guest for life or use your largesse to continue to enjoy life in southern Utah and pave the way for the Kane Kids Community Tennis Program to grow and excel on safe, updated courts. For a donation of $20 or more you can adopt a one of a kind retiree who will never have to apply to be a “chew toy” For a donation of $100 or more you can insure that 3 friends or a small family will remain together happily ever after.
