Checklist for Credit: High quality experiences meet Maryland's Seven Best Practices for Service Learning and serve as a lens to determine quality for integrated projects. These projects allow students and teachers to:
❑ MEET COMMUNITY NEED: The student participated in service learning projects that meet needs in the local, national, or global community.
❑ MEET CURRICULAR OBJECTIVES: The student participated in a service learning project that met the curricular goals and objectives of this course.
❑ REFLECTION: The student took part in reflection activities designed to evaluate and synthesize the service experience.
❑ DEVELOP STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY: Students learn important school, work, and life skills such as working as a team, organizing and scheduling activities, and problem solving when given increased responsibility for the success of projects.
❑ FOSTER COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS: Students learn about their communities, explore career possibilities, and work with diverse groups of individuals and community organizations as partners.
❑ PLANNING AHEAD: As with all effective instruction, an action plan must be created which features specific objectives to be achieved through the activity.
❑ EQUIP STUDENTS WITH KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: To effectively engage in a project, students must understand the issue they will be addressing. Students are often required to conduct research, read articles, and listen to guest speakers.
Based on successful completion of the criteria listed above, the students enrolled within this course have met the curricular outcomes for Student Service Learning as outlined within the Frederick County Essential Curriculum.
