SSR Quarter 3 Book Talks Menu: Books written by African-American or Black authors.Book Talk Requirements: Choose a book written by an African-American or Black authorInclude a one paragraph Biography of the author. *Include a written accompaniment (minimum of one paragraph) that utilizes textual evidence and explains the element of fiction being analyzed by your project. EXAMPLE: In August Wilson’s, The Gem of the Ocean, Aunt Ester uses a powerful imaginative technique to help Citizen process his emotions. She says, “come on, Mr. Citizen, let’s go down to the bottom of the boat. Be careful you don’t fall” (68). There is no actual boat, they are imagining the boat and it is a symbol for where emotions are held. Citizen has to get to the bottom of his emotions in order to free himself from his shame. I created a boat out of clay with a broken heart lying in the bottom to express the symbolism utilized in this play.
