It is the only ecosystem of its kind on the planet and the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles coexist.A freshwater river, 50 miles wide and six-inches deep, flows from Lake Okeechobee through marshy grassland into Florida Bay. The Everglades National Park was created in 1947 by President Harry S. Truman to preserve the wetlands and this slow-moving “ River of Grass.” The 1.5 million acres of Everglades National Park provide habitats for more than 1,600 varieties of plants and innumerable animals, including more than 350 species of tropical and temperate birds, 40 species of mammals, 50 species of reptiles, and 18 species of amphibians. The sea and wetland wilderness invites exploration by canoe or boat. The remaining 5 percent includes 44 islands that form an 18-nautical mile north-south chain. In this watery paradise, one can find more than 200 varieties of fish, which inhabit the coral reefs. Starfish, sponges, soft corals, and other marine plants and animals live and thrive in Biscayne Bay.Located off the eastern coast of Florida, the 180,000-acre Biscayne National Park is less than an hour’s drive from Miami. The park originally was established as a national monument in 1968. It became a national park in 1980, specifically to protect the incredible diversity of mammals, birds, fish, and plants.Biscayne National Park is best explored with snorkels or scuba gear. This cluster of seven coral reefs and sand islands, along with surrounding shoals and waters, make up the Dry Tortugas National Park. Ponce de Leon discovered these islands in 1513. He named them Dry Tortugas for their absence of fresh water and abundance of tortoises.Dominating the Garden Key Island is Fort Jefferson. This fort is the largest of the nineteenth-century American coastal forts. Fort Jefferson’s construction began on Garden Key in 1846 and continued for 30 years, but was never finished.In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared Fort Jefferson and the surrounding waters a national monument. In 1992, the area was designated as the Dry Tortugas National Park to protect the natural and historical qualities. Dry Tortugas is one of the country’s more inaccessible national parks.
