LANA PRIVITERA - MATERIALS LIST for “Our world is upside down” - please read the whole list! ;-) Always purchase the best quality Watercolor Paper, paint and brushes you can afford. Local art stores might have some suitable brands for you, but usually are quite limited. I suggest ordering online from Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff, Jerry’s Artarama, or Dick Blick . PAINTSI recommend any of the major brands, such as Winsor & Newton, Daniel Smith, Sennelier, Da Vinci, Holbein, M.Graham, etc. PLEASE, DON’T buy student quality paint such as Cotman or Grumbacher Academy! Your painting won’t look as good as it should! We’ll use just a handful of colors. These are some of the choices we can use for this project.Raw Sienna….or Yellow ochreLemon Yellow W&N –PERMANENT ROSE… or Quinacridone RosePyrrol red …… or Scarlet Lake Cobalt BlueThalo Green……. or Winsor Green (either shade)DaVinci -Burnt Sienna Deep…. or Daniel Smith Burnt Orange QuinacridonePaynes Grey or Neutral Tint Daniel Smith – Indanthrone Blue. I found it works great to darken colors. Daniel Smith – Perylene Maroon. I found it works great for my dark backgrounds! BRUSHES:If you don’t have brushes yet and want to keep in a budget, I’d like to recommend Robert Simmons White Sable, series 785, Sizes #12, #8, #4. Or you can try the less expensive Cheap Joe’s “Starving Artist” series, same sizes. I use those all the time! Or bring any other synthetic sable, nice quality round brushes you might have. You don’t want them to be too stiff or too floppy.IMPORTANT: you will NEED at least 1 FLAT brush, either 1.5 “ or 2 “ wide. We need them for the background washes. Natural hair or good synthetic sable blends work best for large washes. I have some relatively inexpensive DaVinci Black Goat Hair Wash Mottler series 550, size 30 mm and another in size 40 mm that work perfectly for my backgrounds. . MISCELLANEOUSPAPER: I used to use Arches 140 COLD PRESS exclusively, but lately they’ve had problem with the quality of their sheets. Their Blocks seems to be OK, though (green cover). Other papers good to use with complex paintings of many layers are Kilimanjaro and Fabriano, Lanaquarelle and Saunders Waterford. Do NOT buy Strathmore! You can’t paint more than one layer in that kind of paper. You will NOT achieve good results. - Have one extra piece of the same size of the Watercolor paper, just in case you want to experiment and paint 2 versions at the same time (if you are a fast painter).- Use scraps of the SAME paper to use as color testing strips. - Palette - A 10-hole round palette… or your favorite large one. - 3 Yogurt–size containers or plastic cups to hold large amount of paint, wide enough to dip your flat brush in comfortably. - 2 mid-size containers for water. - BOARD : Gatorboard, or double-thickness Foam-core board to attach the paper to it, to keep paper stretched as we paint. NOT much larger than the paper, nor too heavy. - Masking Fluid - One bottle of liquid masking fluid (Pebeo, Incredible White Mask, or Winsor & Newton, or Cheap Joe’s) + an inexpensive -but with a good point- round synthetic brush to apply the masking fluid. Size 4.- Tiny container to contain a small amount of the masking liquid to be used in each session.- “Incredible Nib” to apply the masking liquid, is another tool that I use it often.- Pencils: 2B + Kneaded eraser or other super-soft white eraser for art. I’ve been using the “Vanish” eraser.- Paper towels cut in squares, or no-lotion tissues.- Good Artist tape, 1- inch WIDE (neutral color) to attach WC paper to board.- Notebook/pen ................
