CHRIS KSOLL

Animal Advocate, Chicago

After turning 50, banker Chris Ksoll began fostering rescue dogs. The first was a Hurricane Katrina survivor; the second was from a puppy mill. This was the start of a journey that led Ksoll to produce a documentary on puppy mills, Dog by Dog, which scored a distribution deal with Netflix. Ksoll and her partners also have hosted screenings around the country, sharing proceeds with local animal shelters. "Why would a banker in Chicago think she could make a film and get it distributed to help four million dogs?" Ksoll asks. Her answer: "Once I knew the truth about puppy mills, how could I not?"

GARRY MOORE

Anchor and Producer, WEEK-TV, Peoria

Mick De Giulio has created kitchens for distinctive residences for 40-plus years. He also does commercial projects for companies such as Kallista, Sub-Zero/Wolf and Meredith Corporation. His work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Traditional Home, House Beautiful and other leading publications. He has been recognized by Kitchen and Bath Business as one of the 50 most influential people in the kitchen and bath industry over the last 50 years. "Design trends come and go, but I get my cues from listening to how people want to live," De Giulio says.

Garry Moore anchors 25 News Today, Central Illinois' longest-running morning news program. He also anchors and produces 25 News Midday and Noon, and serves as president of the Peoria Local of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. As a storyteller in the African-American tradition, Moore is a sought-after cultural arts presenter who has been honored for his insightful, entertaining and imaginative productions. He has conducted numerous handdrumming classes throughout the area as well.

ALAN KING

Attorney and DJ, Chicago

BILL PASSALACQUA

Musician, Effingham

A top employment attorney, Alan King is a partner at Drinker Biddle & Reath, where he serves as vice chair of the Labor and Employment Group. But he may be best known as one of the original house music DJs. A member of the legendary Chosen Few DJs crew, King helped popularize this unique Chicago brand of dance music starting in the 1980s. King regularly plays at clubs and events throughout the United States and beyond, and has been cited as an inspiration by DJs and producers including the late, Grammy Awardwinning Frankie Knuckles.

Bill Passalacqua is a songwriter and musician from Effingham who has been touring North America for two decades as Bill Poss, first solo and then with the Ginn Sisters and Fred Eaglesmith. Comfortable performing a riveting solo set or rocking out with his five-piece band, Poss shifts easily from folk and bluegrass to country and rock. Poss has five CDs and a book, The Bill Poss Travelogue, to his name. He also runs the Moccasin Creek Festival, an outdoor summer Americana music fest in Effingham.

After working on the production side of several major Hollywood films in the 1990s, including Menace II Society and What's Love Got to Do With It, Eleva Singleton returned to Chicago in 2000 to care for her elderly mother. Singleton then returned to film production after nearly two decades away "because everybody has a story to share." Shinemen, the documentary she produced and directed, explores the artistry of shoe shining from the perspective of Chicago shoeshine men, and was featured in the 2016 Chicago Black Harvest Film Festival.

At age 58, Joyce Renee Walker embarked on a professional music career after working for nearly two decades at DeVry University. Walker brings her lifelong passion for playing piano to assisted living residences, nursing homes, hospitals and senior communities throughout the Chicago area and regularly performs at Mariano's supermarkets. Walker also was recently recognized by Unity Hospice for providing live entertainment to hospice patients and local area seniors. Her motto is, "Never allow age to be a barrier to fulfilling your life's dreams."

Born in Cartagena, Colombia, Rosario Vargas has been active in Chicago's theater scene for more than 30 years as an actress, director, producer and educator. Her directorial credits for Aguij?n include `Til Mortgage Do Us Part, Ceviche in Pittsburgh, The Empty Chalices, Genesis Was Tomorrow and An Admiral for the Sea. Her acting highlights include A Streetcar Named Desire with Writers' Theatre; and The House of Bernarda Alba, Blood Wedding and Orchids in the Moonlight for Aguij?n. The National Museum of Mexican Art has saluted Vargas' artistic efforts by naming her a Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz Honoree.

Leo Zarko is a visual artist, poet, children's book author and advocate for the arts. A member of the Aurora Art League and ATown Poetics, he encourages others to participate in the arts. Zarko has published 12 books in the past two years, a feat chronicled at leozarko. com. His children's books reflect positive morals and ethics, encouraging young readers to be considerate and kind. "God has given me a talent and I want to use it to the fullest, as we all should!" he says.

When she's not working as director of membership and brand development at the American College of Chest Physicians, Kathy Jewett devotes many volunteer hours to Easter Seals. In addition to raising thousands of dollars for the organization, she takes a primary role in organizing a family-focused bike ride for Easter Seals DuPage & Fox Valley. The event focuses on enabling kids with special needs and their families to all ride together either using trailers or adapted bikes. The ride has made biking accessible to children who have never had the opportunity before.

At 95, Frances Carter continues to give back to her community, working with adults with disabilities as a volunteer at the Warren G. Murray Developmental Center in Centralia. Building on his career as a public interest litigation attorney, Howard Learner founded the Environmental Law & Policy Center in 1993. It has grown to become the Midwest's premier environmental legal advocacy and eco-business innovation organization, and among the nation's leaders. Yvette Moyo co-founded Real Men Cook with her husband, Kofi, in 1990 to provide a positive family experience for African-American men. The celebration features men who volunteer to cook for and serve the community on Father's Day. The event became so successful that then-Senator Barack Obama once joined the thousands of other men who have donned a Real Men Cook apron. More than $1 million has been generated by Real Men Cook to nonprofit partners and organizations that serve families and communities.

Rebecca Cook Kendall supports the not-for-profit Rockford Regional Health Council's mission to improve community health through data gathering and analysis, education, action and advocacy. Kendall also serves on the Winnebago County Crime Commission and a Winnebago County Health Department advisory board with the goal of reducing the county's homicide rate by 10 percent by 2025 via addressing violent crime through the lens of public health. "People watch you even when you don't know?they see you able to lead but also to follow," Kendall says. "It's not about ego. You have to have trust and faith in yourself."

After retiring as director of ethnic external relations for Kraft Foods in 1998, Charles Reid became full-time pastor of the Bethesda Worship Center. An ordained minister with the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc., Reid serves as a District Elder, Chairman of the Illinois District Council (IDC), and a member of the Executive Board of the IDC. As State Sen. Laura Murphy said in nominating Reid for this honor, "He has mentored countless individuals both at the church and through... volunteer organizations. He was instrumental in establishing an interfaith breakfast to bring all different organizations together to celebrate their similarities. He encourages acceptance of all people."

Senior Services Plus provides services to more than 30,000 seniors and their families every year. Programs such as Meals on Wheels and In-home Care help seniors remain in their homes, while the Senior Travel Program, School House Grill, and Health and Wellness Center provide opportunities for seniors to socialize and remain active in the community. But the organization Jonathan Becker leads not only serves seniors, it employs them as well. Becker regularly hires individuals 55 and over to staff the agency, and most of its paid drivers are retired and enjoying a second career at SSP.

Tutor, Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, Chicago

In 2015, the Vocational Rehabilitation Program at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab received foundation funding to deliver an accessible general education development (GED) program tailored to clients with spinal cord injuries, many of whom are victims of gun violence. Deloris Heard was the program's first volunteer. Heard helped recruit students and became so proficient in the computer-based aspects of the program that she quickly became the go-to person to handle any technical issues that arise. The students know that Heard is committed to them and grow to rely on her for direction and support.

Harris School of Public Policy, University of Chicago

The latest chapter in the distinguished finance career of former Highland Park Mayor Mike Belsky is the opening chapter of the Center for Municipal Finance, where he serves as the first executive director. The center analyzes, reports on and understands what governments can and must do to support healthy, productive communities. To that end, Belsky has commissioned research with prominent academics around the nation, including an examination of the property tax assessment system in Cook County, documenting inherent biases. The center has also created the Municipal CFO Forum, bringing together the CFOs of America's 30 largest cities to disseminate best practices nationwide.

At 58, Janice Lewis reinvented her career, becoming a certified Life Coach and an advanced certified personality consultant. She founded a business, , to help people discover their life's true purpose and attain it. She then applied her skills as a volunteer helping disadvantaged adults and young people, and helped create the Peace Club for Chicago Lights. Now 65, Lewis mentors and leads a team of youth program volunteers at City Lights, serving 200 students annually in after-school and summer programs. In Peace Club, young people have a safe space to discuss how they feel, learn to become better listeners and practice meditation.

ROSEMARY CONNELLY, RSM

Executive Director, Misericordia, Heart of Mercy, Chicago

Sister Rosemary Connelly, RSM, is a member of the Religious Sisters of Mercy and has served as executive director of Misericordia/Heart of Mercy since 1969. Her leadership has been integral to establishing Misericordia as one of the nation's leading communities for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. An octogenarian who frequently works six days a week, Sister Rosemary is a tireless advocate for providing the highest quality of life to people with a range of intellectual and developmental disabilities. Responsible for a $60 million annual budget, she constantly challenges her executive and administrative teams to create new opportunities for those who call Misericordia their home.

CECILIA MCCORMICK

Senior Advocate Specialist, PLOWS Council on Aging, Palos Heights

Following a 30-year career as a microbiologist, Cecilia McCormick volunteered as a home-delivered meals driver at the PLOWS Council on Aging, a nonprofit serving individuals ages 60 and older in Palos, Lemont, Orland and Worth townships. She soon increased her commitment to include client advocacy, helping seniors file for SNAP, Medicaid, LIHEAP and other financial assistance programs. PLOWS eventually hired McCormick onto its staff, but she continues to volunteer as a meals driver and moonlights as a weekend volunteer cooking at a homeless shelter, delivering groceries for a food pantry and helping with retreats at her church.

BETH COULSON

Legislator, Educator, Volunteer Leader, Glenview

After serving seven terms in the Illinois Legislature and teaching for more than 20 years at the university level, Beth Coulson looked for new opportunities to contribute. She has since served on the AARP Executive Council and the Alzheimer's Association Advisory Board, advocating both in Washington and Springfield for more enlightened and supportive policies toward our aging population. Coulson currently serves on the boards of Voices for Illinois Children, Youth Services of Glenview/ Northbrook, the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, Midwest High Speed Rail, Hondius Water Board, the Tall Trees Flooding Committee, and the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (formerly Chicago Medical School, where she was a professor).

President, National Louis University, Chicago

Under Dr. Nivine Megahed's leadership, National Louis University has launched the New Urban University Coalition, which develops innovative approaches to educating 21st-century students; and become a top-ranked university for student retention and employment of graduates in their chosen fields. In addition, NLU encourages enrollment by older working adults and retirees, and tailors programming to meet their needs. As a result, 12 percent of NLU students are over the age of 50, three times the average number at colleges statewide.
