BEST Practices II: Advanced Positive Discipline Methods for Schools

An opportunity for extended staff development and coaching in positive school discipline and behavioral supports.

Presented by: Dr. Jeffrey Sprague, Institute on Violence and Destructive Behavior, University of Oregon

What Is the Opportunity?

• BEST Practices II (Jeffrey Sprague et al., 2001) is an advanced set of strategies aimed at sustaining positive and effective discipline in schools and classrooms.

• Designed as a second-year follow up and refinement training opportunity for teams that have completed the year one BEST training modules.

What Can I Expect?

Before

School sites that have completed the first year of BEST training will be invited to return with a representative team to continue their participation in intensive and on-site staff development and planning activities. A designated site facilitator will be responsible for gathering simple data, scheduling team meetings, and other site coordination duties.

Recommended team make-up (identical to BEST Practices I):

• The building administrator (required)

• General and special education teachers

• A classified staff representative

• A related services staff person

• A parent from the school

• District or county-level personnel who provide training and support for positive school discipline and behavioral support

During

The training involves 16 hours of time (two full days), plus six or more days of individualized technical assistance. This includes whole-day training events and limited on-site, telephone, and electronic (email) technical assistance. Site teams work to identify critical outcomes, such as defining school rules and developing procedures to teach them; they review and revise the yearly plan for implementing and evaluating their efforts; they describe how proposed plans will be communicated to staff and key stakeholders in the building; and they plan their response to comments from school personnel who are not part of the appointed team.

Teams are asked to meet at least once a month between training days to process the information and adjust the school plan. This approach allows the content to be embedded into the daily practices of school personnel, and it improves the chance of maintaining use of the interventions.

After

In addition to the core training, site facilitators guide team members in facilitating and maintaining the process at their school site. Facilitators will receive TA from staff of the Institute on Violence and Destructive Behavior (IVDB) to solve problems and assure that evaluation data are collected. The building facilitator will coordinate meetings etc. and receive a small stipend ($350/year) for the extra work involved.

How will I know It Is Working?

Easy-to-use measures evaluate the success of the initiative and provide critical, performance-based comments to school teams. The IVDB will coordinate collection, analysis and interpretation of data. Giving data-based feedback to schools is an essential component of the intervention and helps keep motivation high.

Cost

BEST Practices II: Advanced Positive Discipline Methods for School Teams is funded by the California Department of Education. There is no cost for this training, but school districts are responsible for purchasing participant manuals for each team member, along with their travel and accommodation expenses.
