Packet 11

▪ Based on a theme by Charlie Steinhice

▪ Toss-ups by Charlie Steinhice

▪ Bonus by Charlie Steinhice

1. He spent his first two pro seasons with the Memphis Showboats of the USFL, registering 23 ½ sacks and forcing 7 fumbles in just 34 games. Since they began keeping the stat in 1983, this Chattanooga native holds the record for most sacks in a single Super Bowl with 3 in Super Bowl XXXI (31), two of them on consecutive plays. Although he spent one undistinguished comeback season with the Panthers in 2000 and played for the Eagles for his first 8 NFL seasons, he may be best remembered for a six-year stint in Green Bay. FTP name this ordained minister and perennial Pro Bowl defensive end, nicknamed “the Minister of Defense.”

Answer: Reggie White

2. Founded in Minnesota, it was one of the few recognizable brand names represented in the exhibits at the International Towing and Recovery Museum and Hall of Fame in Chattanooga. In business since 1947, this company uses 5.1 million pounds of sheet metal and 119,000 pounds of yellow paint each year. Now a subsidiary of Hasbro, it was inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame in 2001. FTP name this toy company specializing in durable trucks.

Answer: Tonka

3. This actor has been top-billed in two projects that did location filming in Chattanooga: the 1986 TV-movie A Winner Never Quits and the 2002 G-rated film The Adventures of Ociee Nash. He starred opposite Powers Boothe and Chattanooga native Lewis Smith in Southern Comfort. He made his film debut as a cowboy in Robert Altman’s McCabe and Mrs. Miller and worked for Altman again in Thieves Like Us and Nashville, for which he unexpectedly won an Oscar for Best Original Song for writing “I’m Easy.” FTP name this critically praised actor, who costarred in The Long Riders with his brothers David and Robert.

Answer: Keith Carradine

4. Their current seasonal offerings include the new Fall Crispy Bars and the Pumpkin Delights ® filled cookies. The only difference between the Fall Crispy Bars and the out-of-season Spirit of America Crispy Bars is that the Fall ones have yellow-and-orange crisp rice instead of red, white, and blue. That’s OK, soon it’ll be time for the Cookie Wreaths and Christmas Tree Cakes. FTP name the purveyor of Double Chocolate Swiss Cake Rolls, Nutty Bars, and Oatmeal Crème Pies, made in the suburbs of Chattanooga and named for founder O.D. McKee’s granddaughter.

Answer: Little Debbie

5. Due to a reporting error by Nielsen SoundScan, on Oct. 13 it was bumped from the top spot in a rare correction by Billboard, putting George Strait’s “50 Number Ones” as the number one album instead of this. It was already the source of some controversy, being an expanded reissue of an album originally released just a few months ago. Buyers are told that if they trade in the original and pay $4.99, they can get the expanded version with the previously unreleased tracks “Red Light” and “Seduction.” Featuring the singles “Yeah” and “Burn,” FTP name this current #1, er, #2 album by Chattanooga native Usher.

Answer: Confessions [or Confessions Special Edition]

EDITOR’S FURTHER SELF-INDULGENT NOTE: Unlike your genial quizmaster, Usher’s mom no longer works for BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee.

6. The aforementioned 1986 TV-movie A Winner Never Quits, which used Chattanooga’s Engel Stadium for location filming, was a biopic about this man, who shunned publicity after his playing days. In 1944, playing for the Memphis Chicks, he was MVP of the Southern Association, batting .333 and tying the league record with 63 steals. He spent only the 1945 season in the majors with the St. Louis Browns, hitting .218. A pure pull hitter, he used a regulation weight bat with his hand about six inches up the bat handle. FTP name this outfielder, the only one-handed position player in big league history.

Answer: Pete Gray [or Peter Wyshner]

7. Barbara Carrera spent summers in high school modeling for the now-defunct Loveman’s department store in Chattanooga. In Death on the Nile, the bitchy murder-victim-to-be is played by Lois Chiles. Tanya Roberts was the sixth and last of Charlie’s Angels. Ringo Starr and Charlie Sheen are married to members of the same exclusive sorority as Carrera, Chiles, and Roberts; Maud Adams is the only one to qualify three times. FTP give the collective noun for characters played by those women as well as Dame Diana Rigg, Jane Seymour, Ursula Andress, and Honor Blackman.

Answer: Bond girls [accept equivalent]

8. Talk about eclectic: On his “Jumpin’ Jive” tour, his concerts featured a cover of the Bessie Smith classic “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out.” (Need I add that Bessie Smith is from Chattanooga?) Other songs he’s only covered in concert include Crowded House’s “I Feel Possessed” and Steely Dan’s “Reelin’ In the Years.” He provided original music for the Debra Winger film Mike’s Murder and composed and arranged Francis Ford Coppola’s Tucker. With his biggest hits from ‘80’s albums Night and Day and Look Sharp, FTP, name the singer/songwriter/pianist behind “Is She Really Going Out With Him?” and “Steppin’ Out.”

Answer: Joe Jackson

9. Remember those two Keith Carradine movies that did location filming in Chattanooga -- A Winner Never Quits and The Adventures of Ociee Nash? Coincidentally, this two-time Emmy winner was the female lead in both. In her high school’s production of The Sound of Music, she played Maria to Kevin Spacey’s Captain Von Trapp. Ironically, she was pregnant when she played the virgin Wendy Beamish in St. Elmo’s Fire. FTP name this woman, a Supporting Actress Oscar nominee in 1995 for Georgia, now starring in the CBS TV series Clubhouse.

Answer: Mare Winningham

10. Chattanooga’s Lewis Smith appeared in only one of the 29 theatrical films to date for which this man has writing credits. Plenty of others, though, have multiple occurrences. Jane Fonda, Jonathan Silverman, Maggie Smith, Ann-Margret, Goldie Hawn, Richard Dreyfuss, and Matthew Broderick can count two each, while James Coco and Charles Grodin have each gone to the well three times. As either actor or director, Gene Saks has five films, as do director Herbert Ross and this man’s ex-wife, actress Marsha Mason. FTP name this playwright, whose films have also featured four performances by Jack Lemmon and six by Walter Matthau.

Answer: Neil Simon

11. They are made by the same division of Newell Rubbermaid that produces Rolodex, as well as PaperMate and Waterman pens. They sponsor the Gary Player Invitational, and Kurt Busch uses a retractable version to sign all his autographs, because after all, they’re a sponsor of his car. Andre Davis and Grant Wistrom are among those involved in their “Autographs for Education” program, which began with that former UT-Chattanooga Moc, Terrell Owens. FTP name this top-selling line of indelible markers, one of which emerged from Owens’ sock in a controversial NFL moment.

Answer: Sharpie(s)

12. It’s not Crossing Jordan, but it had criss-crossing Jordans, as Jordan Benedict left the cast in 1994 after one season but Chattanooga native Leslie Jordan stayed for two seasons in the role of Lonnie Garr. Most of the cast changed at the beginning of the 1993 season. The newcomers were led by Conchata Farrell as Madeline; gone were Wendie Jo Sperber, Ed Asner, and George Gaynes as Senator Smithers. Of the original supporting cast, only Billy Bob Thornton joined the stars in their move from D.C. to the Midwest. FTP name this ‘90’s CBS sitcom starring Markie Post and John Ritter.

Answer: Hearts Afire

13. She had a bad year in 2003, thanks in part to three losses to Chattanooga area native Ashley Harkleroad, one of them at the French Open. From early 2003 to mid-2004 she slid from her peak #5 world ranking all the way to #54 before upsetting Sugiyama and Mauresmo to reach the finals at Eastbourne. Her best year was 2002, when she and Kevin Ullyett won mixed doubles at the Australian Open, and in singles she defeated Dokic [dock-itch] at Wimbledon and Henin at the U.S. Open. FTP name this tennis babe, who in 2002 was instrumental in Slovakia’s first ever Fed Cup title.

Answer: Daniela Hantuchova [han-TOO-ko-vah, but accept plausible attempts]

14. They were the brainchild of Kansas-born Terry Kirkman and guitar wizard Jules Alexander, a high school dropout from Chattanooga. Originally formed as a large-scale, 13-member ensemble, their ranks dropped to six within a few weeks. Their folk-styled first efforts failed, but their third single reached #7 on the charts thanks in part to rumors that the title character was really code for marijuana. Creatively trapped because their audience demanded a bubblegum sound, they shelved their more daring work and cranked out such hits as “Never My Love,” “Windy,” and “Cherish.” FTP name this group, whose most highly regarded hit in retrospect was “Along Comes Mary.”

Answer: The Association

15. His other major successes include the illustrations for Chattanooga native Emmy Payne’s 1944 classic Katy No-Pocket. He and his wife fled Nazi Germany by bicycle in 1940, five years after a French publisher saw his cartoons of a giraffe and asked him for more material. The result was Raffy and the Nine Monkeys, retitled Cecly G. and the Nine Monkeys in English. When he fled Germany he was carrying a manuscript for a full story based on one of those nine. FTP name this man, who with his wife Margaret wrote Curious George.

Answer: H.A. Rey

16. NOTE: Sadly, we must ask John Kilby to refrain from buzzing in on this question, unless it’s a dead duck.

This edition quickly topped the sales record for its franchise, in part because of the addition of Xbox Live capability. One reviewer commented on its distinctive “Homefield Advantage” feature by noting it had little effect on Chattanooga’s Mocs, “whose fans can only get it up for Free Viagra Day.” Adding the Top 25 Toughest Places to Play and a deeper Dynasty Mode, FTP name this popular sports game from Electronic Arts.

Answer: NCAA Football 2005

17. A film in production right now titled Reverie features Chattanooga’s own Dennis Haskins and this actress’s brother Nate. She refuses to do nude scenes, saying, “You have a better chance of seeing God.” She played the daughter of Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Schwarzenegger in True Lies and played Sissy in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. FTP name this actress, who reportedly turned down a Buffy spinoff for her character Faith so she could take the starring role in Tru Calling.

While Stanford’s Tiger Woods was the individual winner, this university won the NCAA Division I team championship in men’s golf at Chattanooga in 1996 -- this was the year before Paul Casey started playing there and four years after Phil Mickelson graduated. They’ve won five men’s baseball titles; the first was in 1965 with three future Oakland A’s – Rick Monday, Sal Bando, and Reggie Jackson. FTP name this university, whose distinguished football alumni include Jake Plummer and the late Pat Tillman.

Answer: Arizona State University [do not accept or prompt on just Arizona]

19. It has few complaints reported, except for one case where a frequent user developed recurrent skin lesions. Internal research at Chattanooga-based Chattem Drugs developed a mild diuretic, pamabrom, which was then combined with acetaminophen; a second version has been added, with the suffix “IB” to note it has ibuprofen instead. FTP if you hate periods, you’ll love this, considered the first over-the-counter menstrual relief product.

Answer: Pamprin [if they say “pamabrom” before it’s read, accept it and stare at them in disbelief]

20. His appearance at Pat Boone’s benefit for Chattanooga’s Bethel Bible Village led to one of the most embarrassing headlines in Chattanooga history, one implying that his former costar and mentor had exposed himself on stage. Ironically another costar, Jim Nabors, was a former employee of a Chattanooga station. Apart from voices in the Disney films The Rescuers, The Aristocats, and Robin Hood, he got very little film work, but he did have a memorable guest spot on the series M*A*S*H as Capt. Roy Dupree, the one who took Potter’s horse Sophie on a drunken ride. FTP name this Southern character actor who prompted the headline “Andy Griffith’s Goober on Stage at Tivoli.”

Answer: George Lindsay

21. An actor with this as his stage name appears in the Bollywood films King Uncle and Two Bankrupt Boys. It’s in the French title for the 1968 comedy Italian Secret Service and in the title of a 1985 comedy starring Eric Roberts as an offbeat marketing exec turned loose to promote it in Australia. The phrase “both mother and daughter / working for the Yankee dollar” made the Andrews Sisters song with it in the title controversial. And in Dr. Strangelove, Col. “Bat” Guano tells Group Captain Lionel Mandrake he’s going to have to answer to its parent company for an unavoidable act of vandalism. FTP name this ubiquitous product, invented by John Stith Pemberton, first officially bottled in Chattanooga.

Answer: Coca-Cola [no, we can’t accept Coke – all those title references are to the phrase “Coca-Cola.”]

22. She was the female lead in Sun Valley Serenade, the film that introduced the song “Chattanooga Choo-Choo.” Her film career wound down by the mid-Forties, but beginning with 1936’s One in a Million she had a string of successful if lightweight films showcasing her talent. That talent won her three consecutive Olympic gold medals, the first at age 15 in 1928. By some accounts she was one of the world’s ten wealthiest women when she died of leukemia while on board a plane to her hometown of Oslo. FTP name this Norwegian figure skating legend.
