Dr. Mark E. Kassel is the Director of Curriculum and Instructional Design for Robert Morris University’s (RMU’s) Online and Off-Campus Programs. His duties include the organization and development of online curriculum and courses, and the training of instructors in the best practices of online teaching.
In addition to his position at RMU, Dr. Kassel is a Clinical Psychologist with more than 20 years of experience in the clinical and educational settings. He actively teaches online for advance degree programs in forensic psychology and general psychology at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Current research and publication efforts are based on a curriculum designed for childcare workers in central Africa in a train-the-trainer concentration. He is a co-author of the curriculum entitled the Global HOPE Project, and it is currently running in Rwanda and Zambia, partially funded by the Save Africa’s Children Organization. In addition, Dr. Kassel is collecting data in order to research best practices in online instruction.
Prior to joining RMU, Dr. Kassel was an assistant professor and director of Curriculum and Instructional Design at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. This position was responsible for the coordination of curriculum and instructional design processes for the TCS system of institutions. This includes high-level interface with campus presidents, program chairs, admissions, program development staff, IT leaders, marketing staff, and subject matter experts in order to facilitate the processes and progress necessary to sustain the creation and revision of sound academic programs and courses for delivery in hybrid and online models. Dr. Kassel supervised a staff of 8 including 1 administrator and 7 instructional designers responsible for more than 200 courses across 11 graduate degree programs on 3 campuses.
Dr. Kassel’s clinical career spans more than 15 years working with chronic mental illness, addictions, HIV, sexual offenders, and multiple other topics. He has held positions as a case manager, therapist, manager, coordinator, and superintendent during his time in practice, and he has successfully worked in private hospitals, public hospitals, State-operated hospitals, Department of Corrections, and multiple outpatient community-based programs. Dr. Kassel has written Federal grants that successfully sustained programs over periods that extended beyond original expiration dates, and many of those programs continue to this day.
Dr. Kassel holds a doctorate of clinical psychology and a master’s in counseling psychology from the Adler School of Professional Psychology. He has multiple certificates and trainings in the areas of behavioral science, assessment and treatment of sexual offenders, and addictions counseling.
Dr. Kassel is attending the Emergency Management Higher Education Conference because he is working with the university on the possibility of creating a new professional certificate program, which will combine applied business knowledge with practitioner-level homeland security skills.
