Why BEST? If you want to improve your communication skills, build understanding of a subject area, use your knowledge to help other students, and build your own schedule, BEST might be for you! This is a great resume builder for internships, scholarships and jobs.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Minimum A- in the subject(s) assisting, 2.75 overall GPA

• Effective communication and critical thinking skills

• Self-starter and independent worker

• Commitment and consistency to work the times you schedule for yourself

• Attend one monthly all staff meeting

• Be available to work a minimum of four hours per week

• Upperclassman or Graduate student

Preferred Qualifications:

• Ability to assist with multiple subjects and varying course levels, general and Polytechnic

• Recommended by faculty/teaching assistant in the subject matter

• Previous peer support, teaching or facilitating experience

• Ability to recognize when to make referrals to appropriate campus resources when assistance is needed beyond your qualifications or comfort

Application Information: Peer Academic Support involves assisting students in understanding course material while promoting independent learning. P.A.S. students are expected to have competency in the areas in which they assist as well as the ability to employ strategies for facilitating student learning. Along with a good comprehension of subject matter, patience and coherent communication to generate understanding.

Possible Courses to Support:

CGT 163, CGT 241, CNIT 105, CNIT 255, ECET 179, ECET 224, ENGT 180, IT 450, MET 111, MET 211, MA 153, MA160, PHYS 218, PHYS 219. Subjects are available by request of the students.

Hours, Location, and Pay

The hours and location will be set between the student and P.A.S. in advance of the appointment but will take place in a common area on the Purdue WL campus. Appointments will be set online through the BEST web link, based on need and availability. The position starts at $9.50/hr for first year tutors.
