THE HISTORY OF COFFEE

The first coffee plant was discovered in Yemen in the 15th century. This magical fruit was boiled in water, resulting in a drink that was thought to have medicinal properties. Ethiopian warriors were known to consume coffee to provide them with energy in battle. As the fame of the coffee plant was spread to other lands by Arab traders, its centuries long journey was about to begin.

From tropical islands to power centres of international trade, coffee was hailed not just as a drink but as a magical concoction that would stir conflict and controversy as it travelled around the world.

ETHIOPIA. THE BIRTH PLACE OF COFFEE.

MIDDLE EAST & NORTH AFRICA. THE FIRST CAF?S.

The coffee story begins in Ethiopia. There is evidence of coffee existing as far back as the 13th century in the Kingdom of Kaffa in Ethiopia. It is not until the 15th century that hard evidence of coffee consumption appears in the nearby region of the Sufi monasteries of Yemen.

By the 16th century, coffee had reached the Middle East and North Africa and by the second half of the 16th century the first caf?s began to appear in Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey). These caf?s soon became meeting places for diplomats, artists, authors and intellectuals.

VENICE. COFFEE ARRIVES IN EUROPE.

Venice was a popular trade hub and the Venetians were the first to import coffee from the Middle East. There was initial controversy over the drink until Pope Clement VIII approved it for consumption by Catholics. The first European coffee house was opened in 1645 in Venice, not far from De'Longhi's home town of Treviso.

EUROPE. TRADE COMPANIES SPREAD THE WORD.

AUSTRALIA. COFFEE IN THE SUN.

These Venetian caf?s were a huge hit and soon started to spread. The British India Trade Company and the Dutch East India Trade Company introduced Europeans to coffee and they embraced it with gusto. Coffee is an intimate part of the modern European lifestyle.

Australians enthusiastically adopted the magical bean in all it's varieties ? the caf? culture in Australia is second to none. The Flat White is an Australian invention and Australian baristas are prized by the world's most fashionable caf?s from TriBeCa in New York, to Soho in London.
