The Umbraco CMS, a free system based on Microsoft technology, has a large following among web developers and designers because it gives them extensive control over their sites. However, the Umbraco CMS has always been run on a traditional hosting model, which means that users need a dedicated or shared server that has to be configured before they can run the CMS software. “We wanted to find a way of reducing the technical requirements for great web design so that Umbraco can be used by a much wider audience, including hobbyists and other users who are not professional web developers,” says Paul Sterling, Partner with Umbraco. “The work required to get Umbraco implementations hosted and configured can be technically complex, particularly for potential users who do not have the time or expertise needed to deal with the IT infrastructure.” Around 2008, Umbraco started looking for a way to address these issues so it could market its solution to a much larger audience. Says Sterling, “We enhanced the product itself so it was even easier to use than before, but there was still the issue of how to deal with the web infrastructure. We started to evaluate cloud platforms to find one that could deliver single-click, easy-to-install simplicity.”The SolutionUmbraco evaluated several cloud providers and ultimately decided that the Windows Azure platform from Microsoft would best help to simplify the deployment of Umbraco CMS–based websites. “The fact that the Windows Azure platform supports open standards is a requirement for the Umbraco CMS, which is XML-based” says Sterling.Umbraco took a two-phased approach. First, to accommodate existing customers, Umbraco created its Windows Azure Accelerator for the Umbraco CMS. The accelerator—which integrates the Windows Azure web role, Blob Storage, and authentication—makes it possible for users to run the Umbraco CMS software in a hosted web role on the Windows Azure platform without any modifications. The second phase is the introduction of Umbraco CMS 5.0, a cloud-based version that will operate natively on Windows Azure and is scheduled for release in 2011. Unlike prior versions of the Umbraco CMS, which were built as Web Form applications, Umbraco 5.0 is based on MVC. MVC is a web application framework that provides three roles—including Model, View, and Controller—to handle different functions, including database tables, interactions and updates, and presentation. Each component can be easily tested independently of the other components. To help customers manage their CMS data, Umbraco uses the Microsoft SQL Azure Database, which provides a highly scalable, fully managed relational cloud database and Windows Azure Blob Storage for storing unstructured binary files. These are vital components for enterprise-scale websites that use the Umbraco CMS. To accommodate smaller web design efforts, Umbraco CMS 5.0 also supports Microsoft SQL Server Compact 4.0, a file-based relational database for websites with relatively small data needs. The BenefitUmbraco has removed the need for users to configure and deploy their own web server infrastructure. “Running the Umbraco CMS on Windows Azure opens up a huge market for us,” says Sterling. “It makes our CMS available to anyone who can sign up for an account on Windows Azure, allowing them to take advantage of the capabilities of a fully hosted infrastructure without incurring any of the overhead. They can just pay for what they use.”With Windows Azure, Umbraco can provide additional features and benefits to its enterprise customer base. “The Windows Azure Accelerator for Umbraco CMS lets our existing large customers move their CMS implementations to the cloud, reducing or eliminating the need to configure and maintain their own web server infrastructure,” says Sterling.Windows Azure is a boon to software development companies like Umbraco. “We don’t have to go to different areas to manage all the pieces, like the database and services and management consoles. It makes for a very compelling platform for developers, particularly for web developers. It allows web developers to focus on their work without having to worry about the underlying IT infrastructure or the associated licensing costs,” says anization Size: 8 employeesOrganization Profile: Umbraco provides a content management system (CMS) that is used by web designers and developers worldwide to create and manage their websites.
