Ideas for Celebrating Public Works Week
Monday- Bring donuts for the department, spend an hour discussing the role that Public Works Plays in the country, the history of Public Works and the APWA. Read them the proclamation that was recently passed by your Commission. Discuss the way your deportment will be celebrating PW Week.
Tuesday- order some inexpensive “business cards” which state “I saw you doing a great job on ______” which you fill out, initial and hand out to employees when they perform a task well. On Tuesday at lunch time, hand out prizes to those employees that have collected the most cards over the past year.
Wednesday- Have a luncheon for the department and invite other departments to come and share. Ask the other departments to give accounts of exemplary performance by PW and express what the department means to them.
Thursday- Take the City Manager out to witness some of the projects that your employees are performing. Ask him/her to share how much they value the employees with them.
Friday- Have an “all-hands” staff meeting. Discuss the infrastructure sustainability crisis in the country and how it impacts the department. Discuss any plans in your city to address this. Let the employees go an hour early after a brief “pep talk” .
