EMC #46 -- SATURDAY APRIL 24TH, 2010

Band Bios:

"Familiar Trees” make subtle catchy chamber-pop which captures the enthusiasm of childhood discovery and the thoughtfulness of being. It is the sound of breathy innocence, watching caterpillars, the veins on a leaf, and the favorite band of the alternative girl you had a crush on when you were 14." - RF

"Ken Negrete defines “Familiar Trees” as a recording project, more than a band, as live performances are rare and as the conception of their songs seems to be a long and complex process. Ken Negrete conceives the music with the contributions of a few other musicians for a rich variety between electronic sounds and more traditional instruments: guitars, cello, bass, clarinet, piano, brushed drums) and really it never sounds like a band, or like classical melodic pop songs. Besides Ken's music, the soul of Familiar Trees is the wonderful voice of Fabiola Sanchez who reminds me of Harriet Wheeler (The Sundays) with more ethereal tones recalling the best elements of the 4AD aesthetics and similar, from The Cocteau Twins to Stina Nordenstam, from Mum to Azure Ray, from Piano Magic to His name is Alive." - Derives

“Familiar Trees” is currently (among other things) working on their second offering, a full length CD, "Inner Course", to be released on a yet to be determined date in the future. Stay tuned for further undulations, moodulations, transformations..,,,Musicians featured on “Familiar Trees” recordings (so far) include: Joel O'Neill (bass), Devin McNulty (bass clarinet), Shaun Darius Gottlieb (cello), Jason Golday (guitar), Davin Givhan (guitar), Tolga Yenilmez (percussion), Ryan Francesconi (guitar). Familiar Trees music is composed, recorded and produced by Ken Negrete.

Oto creates ambient music and soundscapes using live instruments such as guitar, xylophone and melodica along with electronic sounds and field recordings. Started in the winter of 2005 by the current members of Hirotaka Makino, Bunichi Oshiro and Takeshi Udo, and in 2006 released their first EP "sketch 1" from Pandatone's online label Creation Centre.

The Year Zero is a post-pop band formed in 2005 in the very vigorous underground pop scene of Long Beach, California (USA). As of today as well as in the beginning, the 2 main members are Rodney Sellars (Sense Field, Reason to Believe) and Lili de la Mora (RF & Lili De La Mora, Sidecar). 3 other members have joined the band in 2008 and are now permanent members, replacing from now on the Tascam 424 that was used in the past.

The band is, as they say, musically influenced a lot by Brian Eno and My Bloody Valentine, and visually inspired by futuristic movies such as Blade Runner and Brazil. Imagine the music to the end of the world, this is what describes best The Year Zero.

They released their first full length album entitled “Oceania, I Will Return” in 2006, and this, just after releasing the « Three Song EP », both on Californian indie pop label Skipping Stone Records, as well home of Swedish pop acts The Charade and Celestial. The Year Zero are now working on a brand new record that should be out for 2009 but not much else has been revealed yet.

The Scarlet Furies’ music is rootsy and acoustic, marrying pop melodies with bluegrass instruments and 60's folk vocal harmonies.  At once classic and utterly new, their Alt Folk sound appeals to all ages and has a stick-in-your-head catchiness you won't soon forget.  They’re fronted by Raleigh Holmes, a singer-songwriter with waifish beauty and a soulful, crystal clear voice that harkens back to the golden age of torch singers.  She’s backed by her father and four other multi-talented instrumentalists from some of So Cal’s best bands.
