Lesson 5

“Interview with Kiki”

DJ: Well, we want to thank you for coming to the studio today, Kiki. It’s nice to meet you.

Kiki: Oh, thank you. It’s my 1pleasure.

DJ: All right … ah. . .let me ask you a few questions. First, where are you from?

Kiki: Oh, I’m originally from Toronto.

DJ: Really? Where do you live? Still in Toronto?

Kiki: Oh, no, my parents and my brothers and sisters still live there, but I left to go to college in California, and now I actually live in Europe.

DJ: Oh. How many brothers and sisters do you have?

Kiki: Oh, I have two brothers, and I have three sisters.

DJ: That is a large family! Now, you went to college in California.

Kiki: That’s right.

DJ: What did you study?

Kiki: Well, I actually majored in French. And, I’ll tell you, it’s been very useful in my work.

DJ: I’ll bet! Where do you work?

Kiki: Well, as you know, I’m a fashion designer. I guess I mainly work in France.

DJ: OK, one last question for you, Kiki. What’s your favourite kind of music?

Kiki: Oh, I like all kinds of music — I like classical, pop, salsa, rap.

DJ: OK, Kiki, thanks very much for talking to us.

Kiki: Oh, thank you, you’re very welcome.

Lesson 7

“Your name, please”

Receptionist: Hello, Cambridge Language College.

Maria: Oh ... yes. Hello. I’d like to attend one of your evening classes …

Receptionist: Oh, yes. Which class are you interested in?

Maria: English ... it’s course 139.

Receptionist: I see ... Course 139 is for intermediate students. Is that the course you want?

Maria: Yes, it is. Intermediate.

Receptionist: Right. Do you want the short course or the long course?

Maria: The long course, please. That’s twelve weeks, isn’t it?

Receptionist: Yes. Now, I need to take some personal details first. Your name, please?

Maria: Silva.

Receptionist: Silva’s your surname, isn’t it?

Maria: Yes.

Receptionist: Can you spell that for me?

Maria: Yes. S-1-L-V-A.

Receptionist: Thank you. And your first name?

Maria: Maria.

Receptionist: Maria. Thank you. Oh, what’s your nationality?

Maria: I’m Mexican. I’m a student at university in Mexico City. I’m here for the summer.

Receptionist: I see. So you speak Spanish and ... any other languages?

Maria: No, just Spanish ... and a little English!

Receptionist: And you’re a student ... And your date of birth?

Maria: My date ... Oh! The eleventh of October 1983.

Receptionist: Eleventh of October ... 1983. Where are you staying in Cambridge?

Maria: Sorry?

Receptionist: What’s your address here?

Maria: Oh. It’s 24 Cherry Road. The postcode is CB1 5AW.

Receptionist: OK. Now then Maria, do you have a telephone number?

Lesson 8

“Interviews on Lucia, Andy, Julia and Eric”

Interviewer: Lucia, what’s your hobby?

Lucia: Hmm. Well, I guess my main hobby is photography. Mostly I take pictures of…uh ...of scenery. You know, like mountains, the ocean, uh...forests, um...flowers, you know, things like that. I like photography because I can be outdoors, and I love the outdoors. Now, my favourite time of the year is spring. That’s when the light is best.

Interviewer: How about you, Andy. What’s your hobby?

ANDY: Oh, I...I love to fish, especially fishing for….uh...river fish - not ocean fish. No, luckily, I...I live near a good river, so I take my bike and go there most weekends. I...I really love it because it’s so relaxing, you know, just...just sitting by the water, enjoying the fresh air. It...it really doesn’t matter if...if I don’t catch any fish - but, you know, I usually do.

Interviewer: Julia, what’s your hobby?

Julia: Hmm, my hobby. Well, I...I like to paint, and...ah...I do most of my work at home. See, I...I have a room in my apartment that I use as a studio, and... ah... most of the time I usually work from photographs. I work mostly in the evening — it’s...ah...a really great way to relax, you know, after I’ve had a busy day at work. And...ah...gosh, I have to say I’m not a very good artist, but I enjoy painting a lot.

Interviewer: And what’s your hobby, Eric?

Eric: Well, I really like cooking, but not at home. I like to cook at my friends’ apartments...uh...usually once a week on Saturdays. My place is very small, and there isn’t, you know, much room for guests. I enjoy it because it’s a good way to be with friends. It’s also a lot cheaper than eating in restaurants.

Lesson 9

“Field Trip-2”

Jack: Hey Casey. Going on the field trip this weekend?

Casey: Certainly am, Jack. And you?

Jack: Sure. Better take a camera ‘cause there’ll be some interesting animals to see.

Casey: Really? Thought we were going skiing.

Jack: No. Been too warm, so there’s not enough snow. Going to the wildlife park instead.

Casey: OK. Haven’t been there before. No skiing at all then?

Jack: Guess not.

Lesson 10

“What’s in Yoshi’s briefcase?”

Yoshi: What’s in my briefcase? Well, there’s a newspaper, a Japanese newspaper; and there’s a dictionary, my Japanese-English dictionary. I have some pens, three, I think. Also I have a notebook for vocabulary. I write words in that every day. And of course, I have my keys - my car keys and my house keys. Oh yes, very important, there are some photos of my family, my wife and my daughter. And there’s my mobile, I phone home to Tokyo every night. That’s all, I think. I don’t have any stamps and my address book is in my hotel.

Lesson 11

“Description of 3 Cities”

Amelia: Everyone falls in love with Rio de Janeiro. People in Rio spend so much time outdoors. Oh, and they are so friendly. Sometimes, it seems that everyone is on one of those beautiful beaches, especially Copacabana. Many, many visitors come just for the music. Samba remains popular, and you won’t be disappointed by Rio’s excellent nightlife.

Roland: Um,...I think if you come to Sydney, you’ll really enjoy it. The people you meet will always help you, and we’re very friendly to strangers. Oh, and of course, Sydney Harbor is absolutely beautiful — it’s the largest in the world. And if you really want to see some local animals, uh, you should come to Taronga Zoo — there are all kinds of Australian marsupials there, including koala bears.

Lily: Visitors love Singapore for the shopping. It’s excellent, and you can get some real bargains here. But...um...what I think you’d like most about Singapore is the mix of different people — um... Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Europeans. The food is great, too — you know, all kinds of Asian food and not expensive at all. The...um...outdoor food markets are the best places to eat.

Lesson 12

“Interviews on Fashion Style”

First, Danielle.

Interviewer: Uh...Hi, can I ask you some questions?

Danielle: Sure, go ahead.

Interviewer: Great. Um...First, what’s your name?

Danielle: My name’s Danielle.

Interviewer: Uh-huh. And how old are you?

Danielle: I’m twenty-eight.

Interviewer: Hmm. And what do you do?

Danielle: I’m an artist.

Interviewer: Mm-hmm. Where do you live?

Danielle: Well, I...I live in Paris. I’m here on vacation.

Interviewer: Great. So, uh...where did you buy the clothes you’re wearing today? And, if you don’t mind, how much did they cost?

Danielle: Hmm, let’s see. These earrings I got in an outdoor market — they were twelve dollars. And this skirt came from a thrift store, and it only cost eighteen dollars, I think.

Interviewer: Oh, you look great - I love the earrings. Can you describe your personal style?

Danielle: Yeah. I guess...um...“low budget, high style.”

Interviewer: Thanks.

Next, Kenji.

Interviewer: Hi, uh...do you mind if I ask you some questions?

Kenji: No, uh...go ahead.

Interviewer: OK. Uh, what’s your name?

Kenji: My name’s Kenji.

Interviewer: Uh-huh. How old are you?

Kenji: Well, I’m...uh...nineteen.

Interviewer: And what do you do?

Kenji: Well, I...I’m in college. I’m a student.

Interviewer: Great. Where do you live?

Kenji: I live right here in New York City.

Interviewer: Could you tell me, where did you buy the clothes you’re wearing today?

Kenji: Um...Well, uh...this T-shirt came from a thrift store, and it cost nine dollars. And these cool pants, well, they’re from a mall store — they were twenty-seven dollars.

Interviewer: Could you describe your personal style?

Kenji: Um...Yeah, I guess...uh...“different.”

Interviewer: Thanks, Kenji.

Finally, Lindsay.

Interviewer: Hi, uh... can I ask you a few questions?

Lindsay: Sure, I suppose.

Interviewer: Thanks. Uh...First, what’s your name?

Lindsay: My name’s Lindsay.

Interviewer: Uh-huh. And how old are you?

Lindsay: I’m twenty-six years old.

Interviewer: Mm-hmm. And what do you do?

Lindsay: I’m a singer. I sing in a country-and-western band.

Interviewer: Wow, interesting. And where do you live?

Lindsay: I live in Melbourne, that’s in Australia. My band’s performing here in town tonight.

Interviewer: Oh, that’s great. Where did you buy the clothes you’re wearing today? And how much did you spend, if you don’t mind my asking?

Lindsay: Hmm, let’s see, my clothes...OK. This blouse came from a department store, and it was fifty-five dollars. This cowboy hat came from a mall store in Melbourne and cost a hundred and twenty dollars. Kind of expensive, but I think it’s great.

Interviewer: Yeah, it really suits you. Could you describe your personal style?

Lindsay: My personal style? Well, I don’t know, I...I guess...“city meets country,” that’s my style.

Interviewer: Thanks, Lindsay. Oh, and...uh...good luck tonight!

Lindsay: Oh, thank you!

Lesson 14

“Weather & Vacation”

Peter: Hey, look outside. It’s raining cats and dogs – again! I hate this weather. When does winter break start?

Jack: Winter break? It’s only October.

Peter: I know, but I’m sick of studying. I want to go someplace warm and lie on the beach for a week. Someplace where it’s sunny and dry. Florida and Hawaii, maybe?

Jack: Yeah. We can go swimming and snorkelling and get a great tan. Now that’s my idea of a perfect vacation.

Ming: Not mine. I can’t swim very well, and I don’t like lying in the sun. I prefer the mountains, especially in winter. I’m crazy about skiing and snowboarding. In fact I’m planning to go to Bear Mountain with some friends in December. Do you want to come?

Jack: No thanks. I went there last year. I was freezing the whole time. Anyway, I don’t know how to ski very well. I fell about a hundred times.

Ming: How about you, Peter?

Peter: Sorry, I agree with Jack. I don’t want to go anyplace where it’s below 70 degrees.

Jack: By the way, what’s the weather forecast for tomorrow?

Ming: The same as today. Cloudy, cold, and a 90% chance of rain.

Jack: Oh, no! How am I going to go to the library?

Ming: Take an umbrella!
