Best Practice Guide - Activity Template Naming
Concise activity naming is important when naming teaching activities, as these names appear on both student timetables and screens outside of rooms. Template naming can be just as important in facilitating the process of creating and working with Activities.
Template names should ideally include the name of the Module (Course) they relate to, as well as any other information specific to the Activities associated with the Template.
Types of Teaching
It is important to create a distinction between the types of teaching being delivered. Below is an example of best practice:
Spanish 2 First Class Meeting - Activity related is a first class meeting
Spanish 2 Lecture ? Activity related is the main lecture for this Course
Spanish 2 Language ? Related Activities are language tutorials and have been named Group A, B etc.
Spanish 2 Literature ? Related Activities are literature tutorials and have been named Group A, B etc.
Spanish 2 Oral ? See above
In this example, the Activities generated from the Templates will appear clearly in Enterprise Timetabler and can then be renamed as required. If all Templates had simply been titled Spanish 2, distinguishing between both the Templates and the associated Activities would become increasingly difficult.
Teaching Day Pattern
It is sometimes necessary to break up days for whole class sessions. For example, if a lecture was to run Mondays at 2pm and Fridays at 4pm it would not be possible to set this up as an individual Activity. As we would still want all students to attend both days, this set up would require two Templates.

Again, it's important to name Templates accordingly and below is an example of good practice: Working with risk, trust and Complexity (UG) ? Monday Working with risk, trust and Complexity (UG) ? Tuesday Working with risk, trust and Complexity (UG) ? Thursday Any Activities generated from these Templates will be clearly discernible, and the Timetabler has added (UG) to reflect that this is an Undergraduate session. It may be that the days will be removed from the Activity names themselves, but they will be much easier to identify in Enterprise Timetabler. A similar concept should be adopted when teaching must be split over various weeks. General Advice The basic premise of naming Templates clearly is to give enough information to aid the process of working with generated Activities (e.g. assists Student Allocators with sub-group student allocating they undertake). The recommended process is to rename Activities as required and to ensure the Activity Template Name column is active in Enterprise Timetabler.
