Your role starts with planting the seeds of Awareness & Excitement regarding international opportunities. Then you can help your student advisee to plan their course sequencing to accommodate study abroad in their sophomore or junior year. This booklet is designed to assist you determine what study abroad programs would be ideal for students to fulfill specific major requirements and allow students to explore particular interests. Academic Advising for Study Abroad:To study abroad, the student needs to first consult with you, their academic advisor, and determine when the best time to study abroad is and what program fits best with their degree plan or interests. This involves:Encouraging students to study abroad and emphasizing the potential benefits.International experience can pay off when job hunting or applying to graduate school.Certain study abroad programs are vocationally focused (Business, pre-Law, Environmental Science) and may give students better insight and connections into their respective career fields. Assessing the student’s academic progress. What year in school are they? What are the remaining requirements on his or her academic plan? Are they academically fit to study abroad? Most programs require a 3.0 GPA or higher to qualify. Determining what courses can be taken abroad. If there is an international concentration in your major, there will already be 4-5 classes that are designated for the International concentration. Students can also utilize electives to study abroad, so these elective credits should be reserved for the potential study abroad semester during your advising planning sessions. Finding the best time and destination for your advisee to study abroad.Does the student have to take a sequential course that requires them to be on campus for a particular semester? When is the opportune time for the student to study abroad? NU recommends the semester abroad be during the sophomore or junior years. Examine our preferred list of programs which offers suggestions for study abroad programs for each major. Overview of the Study Abroad Application Process:Student and their academic advisor select a study abroad program that meets both the student’s goals and fits into their academic plan or ties into their personal interest.The academic advisor determines what courses in the student’s academic plan are fulfilled by the study abroad program and he/she approves the program and acknowledges it is/is not required for the major on the “NU Study Abroad Application” ().The student then completes the “NU Study Abroad Application” ) and essay questions and submits this to the Study Abroad Advisor (email: swcele@northwestu.edu). If attending a CCCU Best Semester program, student completes the Student Development clearance form.After being approved through the internal application process, student may complete the external program application. To finalize the application, student completes the Yellow intent to study abroad notification form (found in the Registrar’s office), gathering signatures from the advisor, student development, and student financial aid office.During class registration period, student must register for Study Abroad credits with the Registrar. Payment of study abroad fee and study abroad tuition will be facilitated through NU student accounts. Student financial services can confirm the final cost with the student, any applicable financial aid will be applied, and the student must pay the balance on their account. Students are responsible for their own visa (if applicable) and airfare to destination. Course Approval (How to verify if a course is transferable?):Review course titles and course descriptions that student desires to take and verify if they fulfill with required or elective coursework. If the student does not have course descriptions, they can be requested from the Study Abroad Program Coordinator (swcele@northwestu.edu).Frequently Asked Questions: Application Deadlines: For Fall semester, apply by March 31stFor Summer semester, apply by March 31stFor Spring semester, apply by Oct 31stCost: A $500 study abroad fee is charge to the student along with the SA program costs. For degree programs/majors that require a study abroad componentStudents pay their normal tuition, NU financial aid package applies, many NU scholarships apply, but must be verified. Participation scholarships (Athletics, RA, etc) will likely not apply. For study abroad taken for personal enrichment Students pay their normal tuition, financial aid package does not apply, but expenses qualify for education loans.If the cost of the study abroad program exceeds that of NU tuition, the student pays the difference.
